Where your music comes from depends on the person--Steve Earle is a Texas musician no matter where he lives; Janis Joplin was a Texan but her music is San Francisco. Nirvana was a Seattle band; Hendrix found his sound in London. Classic country doesn't really come from Nashville but from a lot of small towns in the South where people like Dolly and Loretta grew up. (Listen to some of the later work by folks like that that goes back to their roots before Nashville prettied it up.)

Forgetting about Talking Heads and Rhode Island makes that whole list wrong. It was already wrong, but that's major.

My favorite the James Gang. Ohio Players obviously, think Devo and many others.

Which State has produced the best music?

    Mussel Shoals, Alabammy.
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.

Oh, come on. Just because a lot of pop-crap comes out of Nashville doesn't mean that a ton of great music hasn't. New York City has produced metric tons of shit music, LA too, but those places have put out some of the best evah as well.

It's gotta be Cali for the sheer volume of great & legendary bands. The only place that could even be argued to be close would be the UK.

    Yeah. Johnny Cash sucked.

Same with Patsy Cline, and Kitty Wells, Hank Williams, Merle Haggard, Chet Atkins. Oh yeah, that hack Elvis.

    Music City. pffff.

B.B. King was garbage. John Lee Hooker was crap.

Don't even get me started on Bluegrass.

It's hard to name a place with a net positive. Most music sucks. Shit, 90% of everything is crap - it's science.

In my formative years Boston had the best music scene in the country bar none and I'll take all arguments and refute them, so don't even start unless you're in for the long haul...but anyways, here is the treasure trove:

    We had it going on.

You can still buy it on Amazon, and you should. http://www.amazon.com/D-I-Y-Mass-Bos.../dp/B0000032YO

Why didn't I know that the Cars were from Boston?

I have some stories about the Boston music scene in the early 70s. I'll tell them to you sometime if you're buying.
