The Eagle Has Landed: SRAM Eagle 1x12
I for one am just stoked it still uses the XD driver. Will likely be putting this on my next bike. I see no reason not to at this point. 500% gear range in a 1x system. A lot of people talk smack about a 50T cog, but if it allows me to use a slightly bigger chainring to get a higher top speed with no loss of a bail out gear then I don't care how big it is.

I agree that it looks sweet. My only concerns are with having an even narrower chain and spacing between cogs. I find I already wear out 11 speed chains quite a bit quicker than 10'speed, and 11 is fairly sensitive to correct adjustment. I can only guess 12 speed will be worse in these areas.

Sweet. Cheaper 1x11. $40 derailleurs are critical to my riding style.

Meh
I've got a gx 11sp derailleur that works just fine.
You won't hear any complaints from me for understandably chastising an increasingly rich prick's sport but you don't need to buy XX1 stuff. I sure as shit don't and I have two bikes right now with scram 11sp setups.Besides the comet that killed the dinosaurs nothing has destroyed a species faster than entitled white people.-ajp

Considering you have to buy an entirely new drivetrain (with the exception of possibly the cranks) and the price is ridiculously high, I predict 1x12 is going to be only slightly more popular than XTR Di2.
I can see this being put on the highest-end builds, but it's going to take a while for things to filter down to those looking to upgrade.

It's only been 4 years since XX1 first came out. In that time, there's been what, 4 or 5 levels of trickle down 11 speed stuff? And now they've bumped to 12 speed. I would assume they'll trickle it down at more or less the same pace - a new lower priced group every year.
I'm just wondering if trickle down 12 speed will phase out 11 speed, or if they'll keep both 11 and 12 speed options on the market.

For me, gear range is more important than number of gears. I am not trying to hit that perfect cadence on a mountain bike like I would with a road bike. With my 1x11 setup; six of the gears are just stepping stones to get to the five gears I ride in most of the time (bailout gear, climbing gear, middle cruiser, and two high gears for jammin'.)
I would be super happy with friction-less 5 gear transmission hidden in the crank paired with a belt drive.Best Skier on the Mountain
