Even newer Toyotas. I had to wait 2.5 weeks to get inner and outer tie rods for a late model 4 Runner. I wanted to install new AM struts and springs--nobody had them (not Toytec, not Fox, not King, or Icon.) I gave up on that.

Actually I got a foam seat bottom sent from Japan and it arrived in 2 or 3 days. Almost as quick as ordering from dealership and usually a few bucks cheaper.

They are super reliable yes. I find their eBay price is often a hair cheaper

Maybe this is too obvious, but an easy thing to check: if your linkage is marginal/loose or the cable is a little low on tension you should be able to detect a difference by manually holding the selector all the way to the end of its travel to see if that changes the behavior at all. The distance between the detent position for 1st and the hard stop may still be enough if it's just got a little too much play.

Maybe time to let the RR go?
Yeah I'm definitely leaning that way and there's a fair chance I end up with an XC70 (or XC60 if I can bump the budget a little).

    We take all comers here.

This got me thinking as I was walking the dog this morning: with the eventual move to EVs, what's the last new IC car I'll likely (want to) buy and what about keeping it running long into the future?

The solution was simple. Two AudiRS6AvantswithaBox.

That's how I approached my recent purchase. Though I didn't give much thought to the keeping it running part yet.

I drove a friend's Tesla last fall and the whole iPad on wheels thing was just so uninspiring. I figured now's the time to get the last of the IC's before being forced to drive an appliance.

I'm thinking we're going to have solid state, quick charge, 400+ mile cold weather range within 5 years and they get sort of affordable and fun within 10. This means that yeah, the next car might be E but it may also be a severely devalued and depreciated 2021/22 wonder machine. Does that means a mid engine Vette could be cheap or ...

Ford is already selling "crate" motors that might drop right in, basically in place of a rear diff and/or front transaxle. Which 10+ year old cars are (or will be) worth converting?

I'm guessing a Subaru Forrester or 4wd Sprinter van with a Coyote 5.0 will elicit the most simp points here on the TGRz.

That's a good point. Audis seemed like good candidates, too, but I think I see a theme: blown seals.

You're talking about the crate E- motors right? Yeah I've been wondering what would be a good candidate as I've been looking around and the best I can come up with is - pretty much anything that strikes your fancy. More realistically it will probably come down to what you can come up with for a battery pack and how much room and weight capacity will you need.

I had the same thought process before buying the Cayenne. Likely my last gas car purchase so get the 420hp and drive it into the dirt or just go full Viking when I pass and burn me up in it.

Whoops, my bad--I thought you were talking spare ICE's.
But, my choices still stand. With the right suspension and springs you could load up the Sprinter with batteries, and probably get 1000 miles range and have enough left over to blow dry your hair in the morning.

Fred, and don't forget about Bobby. The two of them are killing it.
