I thought it was legit to drive an unreg'd vehicle home in Utah if you have a dated Bill of Sale?

Note: I totally may have made this up, but surely there is a basis in truth somewhere? Maybe I'm thinking of the rules in Colorado?

Well, my last car I bought was this little convertible, And I got pulled over north of phx. Cop was not a dick, verified the story, told me to go find some internet and get a temp reg. Have a nice night.

I think if you call the utah dmv they will tell you to get a temp reg. But I too may be mistaken. Basically do your research cause nobody here knows.

I don't expect to get hassled but if something went wrong it would suck.

This. It doesn't take much to mess you up and yeah driving an unregistered vehicle is more hassle in my life than I want to deal with. Neither of these two states has an easy way to get temp plates, they don't do it online. You're basically registering it and going through all that takes to accomplish, just to get the temp plate in NJ means waiting in line for hours and in NY it's app't only and you need all sorts of paperwork and could get dinged for sales tax twice then have to petition one of them to get it back.

The only state I know of that is a bitch about temp reg is Massachusetts. They will pull you over and ticket you if you have a temp reg from another state and insist you get one for the state of Mass also.

Yup, my neighbors kid got a car in NH a couple of years ago and was driving home with the NH temp tag and ended up having to stay the night so he could go to the nearest DMV in the morning to get a MA temp tag. The cop escorted him to the station where he left the car in their lot and walked to a motel, then dad had to take the day off work to go get him and drive him around to get the Mass tag and back to the car. They figured since it came from a dealer that whatever they gave him was sufficient but no...

Was talking to my insurance guy today, and he said if I go buy a truck my existing insurance carries over to new vehicle for 14 days with no new documents.

    No shit?

I'll follow up with another fun fact. Danny McBride, aka Kenny Fuckin' Powers, who modeled the character off former nutcase MLB pitcher and all around jackass John Rocker, were both born in the same hospital in Statesboro, Georgia.

So glad I checked back into this thread... I just sold my BMW and I am grabbing a flight to pick up my new ride in Philly next Wed... I called my insurance agent and she already provided insurance card and will add it to my insurance policy the day before I leave... My assumption was the dealer in Philly was going to provide a temp tag for me to drive it home... Is my understanding incorrect...?

Also, in working the deal out the dealership said they would apply my state tax for the car and will also handle the licensing process for me... I am sure each state is diff but I have not purchased a car out of state so am going in a bit uneducated... The dealership has been fantastic and has great reviews so have been relying on them for guidance... Any feedback would be greatly appreciated...!

My experience with out of state cars is the dealer does the registration, and they pay the sales tax during the registration process. I've always transferred the tags from the old car. If not, and you buy a car in MA and you're from NY, dealer gets sent a temp NY tag from DMV for 30 days. This process can take a week or so.

If I am buying an out of state car, I will pay the sales tax and registration once I register it. Only exception would be if the dealer was a big company store, not Bobby's shop. Most dealers will provide a temp tag to drive the car home.

Thanks gents and the info provided is extremely helpful... I did call the dealer and they are going to provide a temp tag and they will not let me take the car without showing proof of purchase (which I have already done... So as of now I should be good... The tag thing was def a great call out... I only bought a one way plane ticket so need this transaction to go smoothly...

No plate will get you pulled over up here if you swapped the paltes they figure its an obvious attempt to transfer but how would you show intent especialy if you are still driven both cars, do you sign something on the paper work ?

its gov insurance up here so every ICBC agent can renew your insurance in literally < 5 minutes,

WA DMV is so freaking easy it’s crazy. You walk in, show them the title and give them money and they hand you the plates. No mailing, no reservations...

I was in there the other day and overheard the clerk tell this poor college girl who was going to owe $800 on sales tax on an out of state car to forge a bill of sale for $1 so she paid the minimum. At CA DMV they would have yelled at this poor girl....

Separating the licensing and registration into different location helps a ton too.

I didn't say drive without plates.

I'm familiar with BC as well. The plate, insurance, car, and driver are all connected there, whereas in WA there are different entities involved. Basically, the plate and car are connected to the driver by the registration. Insurance is provided by a number of private companies, and policies are connected to the VIN(s) and the driver(s).

So if I sell a car, the plate stays on it. I sign the title, give it to the new owner, and file a report of sale with the state.

The new owner has two weeks to do the paperwork to get a new title, reg, and plates. As for insurance, that is entirely between them and the insurance company.

Every policy I've had has a clause that they'll cover a recently purchased car for a specific number of days, but I've generally just called my agent to get the VIN on the policy right away, and had them text/email a screenshot so I've got something to show.

Things must've changed since the last time I went into the DMV in person, because it was somewhere between the fifth and seventh circle of hell.

I love that! "you didn't hear it from me, but..."
Though it might come back on her because WA uses a "fair market value" on private sales of used vehicles that they consider purchased well below market (I've both successfully and unsuccessfully challenged that one)

When I was a kid living in California in the 80s, my dad's friend had a 68 Firebird that still had the 1968 plates.

i've seen old plates and just assumed the car was a one owner, never thot about plates staying with the car

in every ICBC agency they got a well used set of vise grips & a screwdriver you can borrow for pulling the plates

I think he was, but back then it was common to see the various vintages of plates in the same parking lot.

Depends, I think. When I acquired my brother's 4Runner, I waltzed into my local WA DoL office, claimed that the vehicle was a gift, paid my reg fees, and slapped on new plates. Done. No issues.

Part of that, I think, is because it was a gift from my brother and therefore, not challenged. And it's near a 15-year-old vehicle that came from California.
