It seems like there is a natural cycle on this board. When I first joined, I visited more often, posted more often, was generally more social. ("The change for a nickel" stuff wasn't my thing, but I met and skied with people through the board, and that was cool.) But I also recall a number of longtime posters on TGR--guys who joined in 2001-04--who seemed jaded with TGR. I got the feeling that they once visited often, posted often, and socialized often. But I noticed that they posted less and less, and they are generally gone now. Nearly a decade later, I feel a little like that. I still check in a number of times a week, but I don't feel the desire to participate as much. It seems like a lot of folks who joined around the same time as me are around less and less too. I'm not saying that the site has changed for the worse, just making an observation.
Another observation: It seemed like there were more killer and inspirational TRs before. That's died off a little. It seems like people only post TRs if both it's somewhere exotic and they are quasi-professional photographers. Those kinds of TRs are great, but I liked the more mundane ones as well. I don't know if I've seen a really good resort TR recently. I liked those too though.

Lots of laughs over the years. The GSA and TEDSKI threads were gold. Met and skied with lots of people on the forum and gotten valuable beta when traveling. Had some years where I hardly visited at all. A harmless diversion while bored is what this place is for the most part. If I spent too much time in polyass I would have probably left by now.

It's one of the few places on the web where I haven't been banned
I have met so many great people that I actually get to, occasionally, hang out with in real life

So much good advice that I cannot recall specific examples
Porn (in the same place as all of the above) Try finding that somewhere else
edit: Ty, I still have my bright orange "Die Living" stickers (the original version). If you happen across more, please pm me."You can't drink all day if you don't start in the morning".

This place is kinda like my favorite local dive. You can find advice on just about anything, a friendly well traveled clientele, and in most cases just about everyone is drunk or high.
I'm just sticking around long enough to see the second coming of TedSki though.I still call it The Jake.

01-21-2016, 04:11 PM #60Making your way in the world today takes everything you've got.
Taking a break from all your worries, sure would help a lot.
Wouldn't you like to get away?
Sometimes you want to go
Where everybody knows your name,
and they're always glad you came.
You wanna be where you can see,
our troubles are all the same
You wanna be where everybody knows
Your name.

You know, I only came over here and started posting because no one seemed to believe there was much local support for a coop hill run by skiers from around the world (thus the moniker garyfromterrace). The mag collective was right, it needed local support and "skiers from around the world" (though good for some lift ticket sales) was not the answer to saving the hill.
I would say that TGR had a part in somehow coalescing some random thoughts and making them concrete. It surely helped make me even more fucking passionate about the project, tell you what. It was also a place I could put down ideas and have them reviewed by a thousand passionate skiers (even though some didn't have a clue).
The friends I've met on here have been all first rate, dudes I'd give my place to in a heartbeat or have em stay with me. Hell ensolandes, you come to Calgary mi casa, su casa dude.
I agree with what was said about the TR's a few posts back. They are damn fine and it's a bit intimidating when you're a shitty photographer and not witty in the least. Oh well, I'll try to post some shit up just to lower the bar and hopefully more folks will post up. I do wish it was easier though...
Hope to meet a bunch more of you yahoos at Alpental in a few weeks and at Magic in March.
PS, oh yeah there's also some good reads and laughs to be had.
PPS and there's some nitwits.“I tell you, we are here on Earth to fart around, and don't let anybody tell you different.”

eh, shitting on teletips is de rigeur these days. And lord knows that it did a LONG slow circle around the toilet before finally flushing. But in its heyday, that place was awesome, even if you couldn't say fuck. It really wasn't much different than here, lots of cool witty skiers hanging out. Made a lot of good friends through that site, and I'll always be thankful for that.

It was the original place where I met most of the folks that became ski partners and friends. I just became acutely aware to thin skinned butthurtness earlier than you, Danno.
I was actually thinking about the Clinton Jah River Bretheren Thread the other night. Fucking a that was some LSD'd out wild shit. Did anyone ever figure who the fuck was contributing to that?

Probably, but I also continued to see the good in that place, even as it got worse and worse; maybe it was just nostalgia. But the last couple of years were definitely painful, and I'm not quite sure why I stuck that out (again, maybe it was just nostalgia). However, it wasn't really the thinskinned butthurtness that did it in, even if that was real and annoying. It was the very small handful of loud voices that couldn't be drowned out, like they would be in this place (and a checked out board owner who wouldn't do anything about it).

Yeah, long term posting. Shit has changed over the years. I actually liked the various "shitty" TR's from people just going out and getting after it, and taking a couple pictures with a crappy 4.2 megapixel iphone 1 camera. Felt a bit more human and family like than the super exotic TR's with a soundtrack and a room full of writers scripting out the wit.
Tech talk, gear swap and the padded room are my lurking zones now with the occasional trip into the main for the tahoe thread. If I didn't have kids/family now I'd be at BBI to relive the glory of the summits of old.
edit: and holy shit, only irul and iceman have earlier join dates than me so far.I've concluded that DJSapp was never DJSapp, and Not DJSapp is also not DJSapp, so that means he's telling the truth now and he was lying before.

I came here in '02 under my original Jackstraw name to find old friends before that FB thing. I changed my email and my old user went bye bye...can I blame Dunfee even though he was only 10 yrs old or so at the time?
This place is great for like minded peeps to get solid info, sling shit, and see pics of people just enjoying themselves in the outdoors.
It is a bummer to not see Todd in here because (assumption) some chose to attack one of the guys who provides this place to us all. But hey, he chose to back out and let it be. Rose above.

Same here with the OG Boatertalk. Bought a bunch of gear, met a lot of superfun paddlers. Hell even got totally styled out with a day trip to a river in Canada with the father of Dana Chladek [two-time Olympic kayak medalist] complete with shuttle and gear when i was stuck in Detroit for a month.
Something about the wrinkle in your forehead tells me there's a fit about to get thrown
And I never hear a single word you say when you tell me not to have my fun
It's the same old shit that I ain't gonna take off anyone.
and I never had a shortage of people tryin' to warn me about the dangers I pose to myself.
