It's fortunate the Duramax 6.6 is a good engine because working on it sounds like a nightmare.

I was *this" close to buying a 12 Sierra 2500 Duramax with low miles, great options, great rare color, decent price when a friend told me about the cp4 IP issues.
He said it's a great truck after you spend 12 hours replacing the IP with the CP3 and and re-tuning it....
Ugh, no.

I mean lots of people. They are awesome but they are basically an outdated collector vehicle at this point. And that's coming from someone that has lived in the PowerPoke Center of the Universe since they can out.
If you question is "Is it a good idea?" the answer is probably "It really depends on your use case and budget".

For the Tundra I force folks ^^ you will be getting a new engine
https://www.motor1.com/news/727930/t...-tundra-lexus/
i asked Toyota sales bro about the issue and he said they have sold 200 Tundra's with no engine failures and the truck you just ordered is not part of the recall
Some of those 200 engines will still be replaced, I've seen Tacoma frames stacked up like cordwood out back of the dealer to do the frame recall, thats why I buy Toyota ... cuz something else will be recalled
My son got a new block on warranty for his 3.5 F-150 becuz it used oil due to casting porosity, he doesnt really trust the truck but knows he can't spend anymore money !Lee Lau - xxx-er is the laziest Asian canuck I know

iForce hybrid engines are not getting replaced (yet) - from what I understand the potential immediate loss of power at hwy speeds is why they are doing a full replacement for the standard non-hybrid. The hybrid engines would still have limited power for a while to stop safely so while they might expand the recall right now they are saying issues would just be covered under warranty if something does go wrong.
I got my official NHTSA notice today, looks like i'll be getting a new engine eventually. I've had no issues whatsoever, but am fully onboard with getting a new engine at no cost to me.

So buy a used high mileage '22-'23 Tundra (non hybrid) for relatively cheap and then get in line for a new engine?

its like having a free engine, typicaly Toyota doesnt care if you are the original owner or not, my 3L V6 got a free head gasskette/ free timing belt/ valve adj/ major tuneup at 96000 kms worth probably 1200- 1500 $ and that was 7 yrs after purchase
Just don't forget about the recall programs cuz they do expireLast edited by XXX-er; 08-02-2024 at 02:35 PM.

I got a new free gas tank installed for a 1984 FJ60 Land cruiser I had just acquired as a non-running project in 2022 from an outstanding recall that was never taken care of.
It took a little bit of searching to find the right dealer who would be willing to handle it.
Jim bagan Toyota in South lake Tahoe was awesome and excited to do it, Dolan Toyota in Reno basically told me to "get that piece of shit out of here right now" when I showed up for my appointment with a temporary gas can strapped to the front bumper because the stock gas tank was rusted through lol.

Yep, lifetime recall as it is a safety issue because the stock tank was found to possibly rupture.
A lot of dealers won't do it because a couple of the rubber hoses that are part of the emission system for the ventilation of the gas tank are no longer available so when they plug in the part number they're supposed to replace under the recall they say the parts aren't available and they won't do it.
A savvy dealer will look at all the individual parts and see that the gas tank is still available from Toyota and it's just a few standard rubber hoses that are NLA, and they'll just make them from standard stock

i ask because i hear mixed reviews. some say its a great idea if youre absolutely sure and the truck is straight/rust free... but others have your take with saying its too outdated
im looking for a reliable but used 3/4 or 1 ton and it seems like it could be a good option
curious what others experiences have been

They have their quirks but they are good trucks. Owning a 20+ year old rig is kind of a hobby and much better if you enjoy it. For the price a decent 7.3 brings you can get in a much newer gas truck.
Are you handy with a wrench? The 7.3 is solid but everything that bolts to the engine (including the trans) is 20+ years old. Find out if injectors have ever been replaced ($$$) and if the trans has been serviced regularly (if it's an auto).

If she is square and you like Fords and don’t mind driving a bit slower pull the trigger.

i found one very clean with essentially no rust. trans has been serviced and even has trans cooler and transcommand. injectors have been replaced within the last 50k miles.. truck has 190k and i know the tranny can go soon, but im hoping it would last til atleast 250k before needing replaced.
everything that needs replaced has been... but there are a few things such as tranny, hpop, etc. that could last another 50k plus miles or go in the next few years... which im accounting for
what do you have in mind when you mention a newer gas truck? i would like to spend under 15k if possible.. the clean 7.3 im looking at checks that box

You can find 2011-16s 6.2 Fords in that price range, but mostly with higher miles.
It sounds like the 7.3 you're considering is pretty well sorted, and clean ones will hold their value for the long run. If you pass on it send me the link Take my advice for what it's worth though, I often wax nostalgically about my old 97. Should have never sold it.
