I got rear-ended a few weeks ago. Initial repair estimate was sub-total loss threshold, but they found more damage after disassembly and are now totaling it. FML, I am not excited to be truck shopping in the current market.
Payout is going to be $10,300, which is damn good for a '02 F150 with 135k miles. Any of these look like a dumb idea?

I should probably up my budget to $15k-ish, but I am not excited to have a payment again.
ETA: This is damn tempting, branded title though and the rear seat look small: https://cars.ksl.com/listing/7347014Last edited by Dantheman; 12-03-2021 at 03:14 PM.

Pickups use to get ~4-6 mpg too. It will get better as the technology improves.

So apparently this was totaled due to rear-end damage so I'm less concerned about the branded title. But, looking closer it's the 4.6L. Everyone online says to get the 5.7L, but compared to the 5.4 Triton in my old truck the 4.6L has more HP (310 vs 260) and similar torque (327 vs 350). Will I regret the 4.6L? I don't tow, but am often fully loaded with bikes and camping gear.
I'm also looking at this: https://cars.ksl.com/listing/7554366#
Looks to be an 8-ft box. Mad truck cred but that's a long ass truck.

Trucks.
If you're not planning to tow maybe go drive that Tundra and see what you think. I bet it will drive great compared to what you're used to.
At 15k, you're probably close to being able to step into a 2011+ F150 with a 5.0, which is a way better motor than a 5.4. I know prices are dumb right now though.
And that red one is a 6.5' box. They don't make a crew cab f150 with an 8' box. I drive the same truck but with a 5.0, you get used to it. Assuming you don't have to park in the city frequently.

Oh I'm going to drive it for sure. For an '02 my truck actually drove really well. Only one previous owner who was an older gentleman that babied it, suspension still felt great.
You would think, but I'm not seeing any. Current prices are beyond dumb. When I got the call that they were totaling it I just put my head in my hands and sobbed a little.
I think you're right. Looks long AF in the pics for some reason.

It's not specified in the ad, but more digging indicates that the red Ford is the 4.6L not the 5.4L. That might be a deal-breaker.

FTR, the Ford 5.0 gets reasonably decent mileage... for a full size truck.

I paid $20k 5 years ago for a 2013 w/ 50k miles on it. Then the motor blew up at 80k. Fuck Ford and fuck over paying in this market. A 2009 w/ 150k on it? Haaaa, yeah right. F that Shit. That truck will bleed you dry with repairs and gas money.
I saw a nice '12 Tundra the other day for $22k and under 100k, and it was an hour away from me. Almost jumped on it. It went quick.

1. I was already driving a 2002 with 135k. Seems unlikely that a 2009 with similar miles will be less reliable.
2. Of course this is a terrible time to buy a truck. I'm not doing this voluntarily. I loved my truck and had every intention of driving it beyond 200k. It's not like the market is going to improve any time soon or that I have the option to wait it out.
3. Around here a 2012 Tundra in good condition with less than 100k is currently $30k. That's just not happening.

3. You'd be better off with a Tundra if you can swing it.
4. That's fine if ya love the Ford, go for it. But that seems like a crazy price for a 2009 w/ that many miles. Look up the KBB, $15k probably double.
