Seems like a 2,000 lbs. camper with bodies and gear would easily exceed GVWR.

What's the stated payload for exactly the truck configuration you are considering?

First you have to decide if you're the type of person that cares about being overweight or the type of person that doesn't. In this country you can be either one, up to you.

F150 with payload package does pretty well and is nicer to drive than 3/4 ton. Newer Alu F150 with payload pckg is even better, but difficult to find/identify used. Even then, you're only legally hauling a lightly optioned pop-up (FWC, ATC, Northstar)

I have the 3.5L ecoboost F-150. Towing capacity is 13,200 pounds. 2,000 pound trailer is not a problem at all.

Big difference between a 2,000-lb trailer and a 2,000-lb slide-in (which is what I think he's asking about).

Slide-in was my assumption as well.

yes slide in. looking at the specs from ford. The regular cab 2 wheel drive 8' bed in 3.5 is rated to 3200 lbs. However I am thinking about a 4wd supercab with a 6.5 bed with the 3.5. The spec sheet does not list this model, only the 8ft bed. Payload is rated from 1980 to 2700 lbs if you get the heavy duty pay load package. I guess the 2700 lbs would do it but like mentioned better have no friends or very skinny ones.

Wonder if HD suspension was offered on the supercab shortbed for 2019.

Ahhh, okay, missed that part. Hence payload vs. towing capacity. Got it.

Had a '13 eco with 6.5' bed and tow package. Was really disappointed how the rear end wallowed with much weight at all on the back or towing. Air bags fixed it but it was actually pretty ridiculous for a half ton with decent weight ratings. My buddy had to air bag his to even haul a lighter Four Wheel pop up camper. I think his was a '14. I eventually added a spring and Bilstein coils in the front and it started driving like a pickup. Maybe it's better now.

Ecoboost sucks for fuel economy when things like a camper are added, you would probably be ahead with the 5.0. Increased front windage is going to keep you in the turbo and inefficient more often.

If I was going to put any camper over 1000# in the back of a truck, I would be looking at a 3/4 ton pickup truck. The ride damn near as well as a f-150, and they really aren't any harder to drive or own. I've owned a lot of these trucks in the past couple years, and built about 600 lighter weight campers on customers vehicles in the past year and a half or so.

I would be looking at an f-250 if I was in your shoes. Should be able to find an alumiduty in that zone, if not a later model from the 2011-2016 generation. Especially since ford just switched to the 10 speed in full size trucks, really seeing a drop in price.

Ride quality will drastically improve while maintaining payload with a set of leaf springs from Deaver. Cost is about 1000+install. I won't build another leaf sprung truck without them. Plus with the full-size truck you can run a 35" tire which will look killer and improve ride quality as long as you keep it on a 17" wheel.

If you really want to be more comfortable than even a stock f250, give carli suspension a shout and run something like the commuter or backcountry system.

tl;Dr: you can totally build a big camper hauling f150, but its gonna suck and be dangerous to you and others on the road. You'll be way better off with a 3/4 ton, and well within payload capacity as well.

Single hit it right on the money. I have a 12 supercrew 6.5 F150 with upgraded suspension. It checks most of the boxes for me but if I was buying a truck with plans to run a slide in I would 100% go straight to a 3/4 ton. There isn't even much driveability difference with newer trucks and they are damn near the same size.

Check out page 9 here: https://www.ford.com/cmslibs/content...tyPU_Oct15.pdf

Doesn't have F-150 info, but the F-250 version of your configuration still sucks for any decent camper.

I have a F-350 SRW Diesel with a northern lite that weighs enough to put me exactly in line with the RAWR of 7230lb the way I load it and the stock suspension was entirely inadequate.

Also, people have disagreed and may disagree again, but I don't understand the point of a 3/4 ton anymore. The cost difference for a 1 ton is negligible, as is the perceived difference in handling attributes.

Now... if I was like 99% of truck camper people and wasn't exclusively driving on icy/snowy mountain roads in the winter, I might not care so much. Still.... The new HD trucks have much nicer suspensions than the old ones. At least drive one before deciding.

They are the same size. Superduty and f150 share identical cabs. Right down to the door panels. Shirt bed superduty is 6.5 bed while long bed f150 is also 6.5’. I own a 2017 superduty. It’s very driveable if you like trucks. Chevy ifs 3/4 are nice riding also

Well if build times weren’t a year out I’d be buying from you. Unfortunately the fact that palomino is readily available has me looking. But 1500 on 2000 rated truck is pushing it.

I’ve been plotting the two boxes idea so that you can have them double wide or stacked on top of each other, and it occurred to me they look a lot like coffins.

Bet you could do that round world trip and exclusively stay in Walmart parking lots

Ran across this on my power walk. Looks look like it went though and ripped out some bald eagle habitat or something
