I researched the winter camper market 2+ yrs ago pretty heavily, and among the very lightest I could find were this series from Northern Lite: https://northern-lite.com/special-edition/ . I.e. dry weights in the 2600 - 3200 lb range. If you check out highangle’s link to mfger specs on the Bigfoot range, they’re 2900-3200 lbs. None of this is particularly earth shaking news to anyone who’s looked into the decently equipped and sturdy winter campers from Lance etc. 1300-1400 kg dry and a lot more loaded up for a trip.

:shrug: if someone has an actual mfger link to the groundbreaking ultralight winter campers in the sub 1000 kg range I’d be stoked to see that. :thumbs up:

Were you looking only at the late model huDge campers? The older ones were much lighter.

Here's the 660kg tag on my 1993.

Loaded with skis/gear/food it's about 1900 lbs, per the calibrated truck scale at my workplace. That puts me a couple hundred pounds over GVWR.

OME Dakar leafs, bags, Bilstein remote res, etc.

I had a bigfoot that weighed 1300lbs dry, 1800lbs loaded per truck scales. The older campers are/were lighter

I haven't weighed it, but I'm pretty sure my popup camper weighs more than these older fiberglass hardsides. I figure it's at 2000-2200 wet weight with food, clothes etc.

It seems like it used to be that an American half-ton or large SUV could be had cheap enough to offset the shitty mileage and other cost of ownership, but is it still that way? I know gas is cheap, but $1,200 set of tires? Acoustic windshields? Recalibrating all the safety things?
Is it all the active safety features, is that what's driving the cost?
And that's without even getting into diesel. Whoa. No way the mileage offsets the cost of ownership anymore. There's no ROI at the prices they sell for. No way. God help you if you need to haul weight, I guess.

Truck is the new family wagon and they load them up with all kinds of options that cost a lot

yeah the tacoma has a high if not the highest resale value, in spite of not being a "real truck" people like them/buy them so you should ask wtf is with the price of trucks real & otherwise ?

my 2010 Ranger was 19, 000 can$ for a not real truck ( so about 5$ US ) eh, but I think they did that by selling it with power nothing/rubber floor mats/shitty radio/ 5spd manual also the line/tooling had been long paid off sometime in the last century

A lot of these trucks are like luxury cars now. My F-150 is waaaaaay nicer than any other vehicle I've owned before. Even the base line models have a lot of bells and whistles these days.

Ha! Every middle class soccer mom here has a 1/2ton crewcab with at least mid-level trim. Most of their men drive the company 3/4 or 1ton with the fuel and tool box in the back. Even my city lady has partly forsaken her little 2L wagon for the 1/2ton family cabin/vacation cruiser when she has any way of justifying it. I just bite my tongue and keep my old 1st gen taco going, with the sled in the bed.

Perhaps you are poor? Perhaps you don't want to finance a truck for 72 months. Perhaps you are old and don't realize that mandated rear view cameras, emissions standards, lane departure, self adjusting headlights, nav systems and fancy tailgates all add to the expense of a truck. However, for all your observations, there seem to be tons of them on the road and selling just fine without your money.
Times change and you sound like my dad when AC and power windows became standard. When people can't own them or finance them they won't sell too well.

You can buy a new mid trim Nissan Frontier 4x4 for under $30k. And for 2020 they’re updating the engine / tranny finally. That’s what, 17 grand in mid 90s dollars.

I always liked'em, and friends had SR5s with 22Rs and later 6-cylinders and they were fun and reliable...I even knew a Toyota dealer who went to jail for bank fraud financing everyone [a mini-CDO scam where the bankers he was in with immediately sold your bad-credit financing for a maxed-out truck to several payday loan-type operations...]...

But hell the Ford dealer was right next door and you couldn't sit at the wheel and open the passenger door with your seatbelt on in a Ford - it was too far away. And the Fords got the same or maybe a couple mpg better than the Yotas [never could get over that] and cost a couple grand less...and you knew a Ford AC was just gonna blow colder and the electric windows were gonna still work when you traded it in...

Outside or someplace had a story about a guy who lives in his rigged out Taco. Has to sleep scrunched up because his truck isn't wide enough, but at least he gets to do it in a Taco instead of spending less $$$ on an American truck that's wider and, you know, pretty much does everything else better for cheaper.
