Man, I remember buying a Taco w/ 80k on it for $10k, driving it for 200k then traded it in for $6k. A friend of mine just found a spotless, like new, '04 manual extended cab with 90k on it. I think he paid $15k for it. Old guy just couldn't drive it anymore. My buddy had to scrape an AARP sticker off the rear window. haha.

I had a 96 Ranger that I traded in for I think $3k in 07 with 180k. They go for 2x that now.

Taco if you want to Taco. I see just an many if not more high miles Chevys around here (and 2nd Gen Cummins but that's a different deal).

Yeh Chicken Tax! A great example of how tariffs on global manufacturing play out long term.

Looking at a 2009 avalanche as a third car utility vehicle. Camping, ski trips, mtb shuttles and house projects. Will not see many miles. Has a tune for dod/afm delete and decent maintenance. This seems like a solid option, anything I should be aware of?
Also considering a 1st gen tundra but they are stupidly priced.
How bad is an f150 5.4l? Lots available for good prices but are they really ticking time bombs?

My 2010 F150 FX4 5.4 with 180k suddenly started using ridiculous amounts of oil, like a quart every 250 miles. BobMc's shop had it for two days and couldn't find anything wrong. Not really sure what I'm going to do except drive it as little as possible and keep putting oil in it.

Need to call bob, my 2014 F150 just decided it needed an exhaust manifold, timing cover gasket, and vacuum pump. was not looking to spend the ~$8k the dealer wanted for those services plus front brakes.

Stealerships, what a racket. My daughters 320i had a communications module shit the bed and our indie could not fix it / wouldn't try. Had to go to the stealer and five grand later, she can listen to her radio. Then she had to replace all the struts and front brakes. Spent $8 grand on a car that was likely worth six.

Never in U.S. history has the public chosen leadership this malevolent. The moral clarity of their decision is crystalline, particularly knowing how Trump will regard his slim margin as a “mandate” to do his worst. We’ve learned something about America that we didn’t know, or perhaps didn’t believe, and it’ll forever color our individual judgments of who and what we are.

I've always been very anti-lease, but auto repairs have gotten so complex and astronomically priced the buy and drive into the ground math is starting to not look so great these days.

I'm still rocking my 2003 gx which has been relatively reliable but at this point, but this car is 22 years old and isn't going to run forever.

We have a 2001 Honda Odyssey in the family that I keep saying that about... but it keeps going.

Mileage limits on most leases are around 10k/year which isn't much. You normally get penalized hard for going over those limits. Then, even something like a base model Civic is going to cost you like $2500 down and $350/mo. My old-but-still-in-pretty-good-shape vehicles have been costing around $1500-$2500/yr to keep running which looks pretty good in comparison (unless my truck needs a new motor...).

edit: also remember to factor in registration and insurance on new car, which is going to be a *lot* more than a 2003 GX.

Yeah, with what we consider old cars now the buy and hold math still works, but these new ones now in 10-15 years, I'm starting to be skeptical it will make sense financially. For example, a taillight replacement on a Ford f150 made after 2021 carries a 3k cost to replace due to the BLIS system being integrated. 3 freaking grand to replace a taillight on a truck. Even used on ebay just the part is going for 500+, and you have to salvage the blis sensor from your current one for that option to work (not always possible). That is just the tip of the iceberg on new cars and repair costs. At a certain point, it makes zero sense to keep a car long term if replacement parts are the equivalent of six months in lease payments for basic stuff.

$3k for a taillight is definitely insane. You can't help but wonder how much of this is intentional to increase turnover and push people out of ownership entirely.

In a lease, dont you end up having to pay for repairs for things like a broken tail light when the lease is up? At $3k that would probably be an insurance claim. But if thats what things are going to cost, none of us are going to be able to afford insurance soon. We end up paying for it one way or another.

Ill be doing whatever I can to avoid dealing with things like that. I was hesitant enough about buying my 2019 taco. Fortunately I was able to turn off most of the nanny features. If new vehicles become unaffordable it will help sustain a bigger market for parts to keep older vehicles on the road.

Headlights can also cost a couple k. Same w side view mirrors. Integrated lock activators? Cha Ching. The replacement cost on basic parts has gotten nuts. And if you haven’t noticed, manufacturers are designing headlights, taillights, etc for specific models now so the amt of parts out there will be much more limited and much more expensive. At this point, you better answer the call from the extended warranty people or be prepared to shell out. For new models, I think a lease w damage protection might be the way to go now. I’m just gonna try to buy pre Covid used with as few tech thingies as possible.

Within a two weeks of owning our twenty-one sienna, somebody clipped and cracked the plastic of a side view mirror in a parking lot. this was in April. Will likely never get replaced by us.

Dude, yeah, car repairs are expensive AF but you CAN find a lot of shit online and DIY a quick amazon search found replacement mirrors for '21 siennas from $47-$110. Ebay is also a resource, but sketchier. Amazon has a TON of car parts. I got some great smoked out headlights for my Tundra for a little over $100 and they went on in about 15 mins. No reason to be driving around a janky car because the dealer told you it was gonna cost $1000 for a new one. Side mirrors are pretty easy to DIY. If it is just the mirror portion that broke, it can be even easier, look up burco mirrors and you can get one that'll just stick over the old one.

I've used a cheap Amazon plastic repair gun and it surprisingly does a strong repair. Basically it hot melts a stainless steel zigzag wire into the plastic on the hidden side of repair.

Thanks! I’ll check out those links and dig a little deeper. I’ve replaced mirror portions before on other cars but haven’t looked closely about replacing the whole thing.

Funny you should say that... We're strongly considering one for an extra vehicle for cheap insurance, decent mpg and a 5spd. I keep seeing the last 2 years of them for decent prices.

That Avalanche is basically a Suburban with a tailgate - - so same reliability / same common issues. Can you fit bikes in / on it in the way you need to? (tailgate pad on a very short bed may be difficult, but if using a rack, not an issue).

I wouldn't buy a 5.4 Ford. Google the spark plug / cylinder head stripping issues, if you haven't already.
