How many downcountry ebikes can i carry on my overlander? J/k
5.5” bed with a GFC or FWC wouldn't be too bad would it?
Go older on the Sequoia. I have a 2001.
If i had to drive my tundra every day I would hate it. Too stiff. Cant imagine driving a 3/4 ton all the time if I have no intentions of towing or hauling weight for work.
Get a Taco crew cab 6” bed, with a GFC or RTT. I have taken a stock one up and down radical hill, middle fork, north fork swan, GA pass, etc. A 2.5” lifted one up Red Cone.
That tundra w/ camper has been over Pearl pass, brush creek, Cement creek, webster pass, sts John, deer creek, miners, and a shitload of other stuff. It doesnt have a locker, winch, fancy bumper or anything. I do carry traction boards and ropes/shackles. Only had to use them for other people though.

I don't think you can "Overland" without a TrashARoo, a YouTube channel, and a fully curated set of dutch ovens.
The struggle is real. Even with an unlimited budget, there really is no perfect vehicle.

I think you just get over the hate, rustle up $50K, put a gun in your boot and walk into the dealer.

Trucks.
Between the tundra and ram with your ‘needs’ and use case, the Toyota all the way if you are going to be spending money on suspension, brakes and other add-ons. It will last you longer, and will carry more resale value if you decide to go a different direction later.
True HD work trucks, ford and GM/chev with base build. Full stop. Adding bells and whistles will reduce the functionality, so trade-offs for creature comforts just like all the other brands.
Most want a vehicle for 10% of their actual use case. Exception being Dodge owners who buy for 1% use case, then never use more than 80% of the actual truck (couldn’t help myself).
Price of trucks now is insane. Obviously the market has too much disposable income. So much unnecessary shit. All trucks have dual climate control - they’re called windows. Well, except when the electrics go to shit.
Lucky to still rock the quiver. ‘03 Tacoma extracab, add-a-leaf carries the sled perfectly, don’t care about getting a flintstone car wash when hunting. Will spend another $5k on it before even thinking of letting it go. Just now replacing the bumper due to rust. Rust will be what takes it off the road eventually. Everything else just works forever. Then there’s the ‘15 halfton chevy crew with cap to tow the trailer for family adventures. Mid-level trim and makes highway trips comfortable for everyone. Yes, it has modern dual climate control. Probably should have gone 3/4ton as at least one trip per year tests the capacity of the truck. Rounding out the fleet is the ‘12 Elantra wagon for around town and trips to the city. Cheap to buy, maintain and run. Can carry all the skis or bikes or canoe, three people +hound and their gear. It does need new shocks/struts. Ticks along like a sewing machine.
Insurance for all three is a bit expensive (wagon and taco with 3rd party and windshield replacement only, no collision anymore), but regular maintenance coupled with low annual km, using each vehicle where best suited keeps the gas and repair bills down.
Like mentioned above, if only two vehicles for our lifestyle, then a med spec 3/4ton ford or chev, and an efficient Korean or Japanese wagon/sedan for around town and light-duty adventures.
As far as fuel type, unless work truck needs to pull a second home or 30ft boat, or working with heavy equip burning the oil, truck probably should be having dual rear wheels, then a Diesel engine doesn’t really pencil out here.Last edited by BCMtnHound; 09-01-2024 at 11:55 AM.

Heh. We only have the one child. If we had more, then ya, make that a minivan. Minivan could replace the truck even if I lived in a condo or apartment in the city, amazing what they can carry from home despot. AWD with decent rubber and it’s amazing where they will drive to as well.

In 2011, I laid a tarp in our empty minivan, went to the soil place, and filled the van with loose sand for the large sandbox that I was building. Still have sand in crevices of the van. Hauled 8’ t-stakes in it last weekend.

Update on trying to buy a truck:
I did contact a couple of auto brokers and didn't seem to get far.
I got excited by the F150 Lightning, w $2k Ford credits, $7500 fed and $5k CO, plus 0% Ford financing for 60 months. I emailed the 7 closest dealers, asking if they had any in stock for less than $80k MSRP (the max price for getting fed and state discounts). One Front Range dealership's like, yep! Here's the sticker. Blue, Flash trim, extended range 320 mile battery. I say cool, I'll take it. We go back and forth getting things lined up, he finally says I'll send you the paperwork, just sign it and send it back. He sends paperwork for a completely different truck, base level trim, standard range 200 mile battery, same price. I say fuck you, quit wasting my time you lying piece of shit.
So yeah, buying new from a dealership still sucks in 2024.

Dealerships are the worst. What's your best price? Where would you like to be.....As little as possible. So it goes back and forth, back and forth....You see a price online, all the incentives, and it is never that price.
I ended up doing Carmax just cause I couldn't stand the haggling, adding about $5k for stuff you don't want - diamond coating, etc....So archaic and painful.

When I'm talking to dealers every time something other than what I asked for comes up I get up to leave. I'll say something like 'that's too bad, remove the charge or... ' as I turn to leave. It usually works. 3 times now I didn't pay for window etching that they had already done at the dealership, one was on a special order car.

Man, I bought my Taco a few days before Covid shutdown. They seemed desperate. It was a "unicorn" because it was a manual TRD. Went back and forth with them, was ready to walk. Talked to the wife on the phone, there was another salesman in the cubicle next to me, started telling her I was just gonna bail and got to another dealer or buy the used one down the street that I had just looked at (BS). The salesman in the cubicle gets up and walks up to the manager's office. Next thing I know, the manager comes down with a much better offer, and ask if I will just buy the damn truck. I did. It was pretty comical.

Damn, sucks to hear about the dealership shenanigans. I thought that shit was getting better, but until recently hadn't dealt with a dealer in 20 years or so.
I should put in a plug for Mark Miller Toyota in SLC, then. Leah helped Ms.B navigate through the waiting list for a '23 Corolla Cross hybrid with no mark up BS, gave her updates on changes, production delays, etc. and delivered exactly what she wanted. The Ogden dealership wanted a larger deposit, had a $3K dealer upcharge, and weren't transparent on their waiting list. I then put down a refundable deposit for a hybrid Tacoma and she did equally well keeping me up to date on status. When it was announced they weren't making the hybrid in a 6ft bed except the Trailhunter, we switched gears and went 4Runner instead. Got exactly what I wanted, no markup and no push for upsell options, etc.Montani Semper Liberi

Good experience buying a new truck at a dealership over the weekend. Ended up with a '24 Chevy 1500 Trail Boss w/ 3.0 Duramax. Crew cab/standard bed. Got about 5% off sticker and financed at 0% for 36 mo. 32 mpg on the way to work this morning. 28 on the way home.
So who needs a well-maintained 2010 F-150 XLT 4WD supercab/standard bed w/ 5.4 V8?
