I thought he left after his last eighties disco album.
Jezuz, the NYT is treating this like a major cultural icon died. Major statesmen have gotten less obit space. Somebody tell them Studio 54 closed a long time ago.

Aww man. Sad news. I freaking loved David Bowie as a kid. Guy really put the "art" in musical artist for sure. Odd timing, I was actually just about to pull the trigger on this vinyl box set they just came out with not too long ago: http://davidbowie.com/fiveyears/

Dude, he was a major cultural icon. The subtext to this eulogy is that American mainstreamish culture doesn't have music celebrities with much artistic weight anymore. Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus vs Lennon and Bowie?
I'm not at all arguing there aren't fantastic musical artists today. I listen to them all the time. But the intersection between mainstream and high culture is sparsely populated these days.

STFU Benny. Bowie was an artist in every sense of the word, who arguably has made a bigger, longer lasting impression on modern music (ie post-60s) than the Rolling Stones.
Thanks for the effort, Starman.

His death hit me in a strange way when I heard about his passing this am. I heard one of his songs yesterday while driving and thought " he's prolly gonna die soon." Fuck! I hate it when that shit happens. There was no mention of his death then, apparently the song was just on the playlist.
I encountered Bowie at a bar named the Blue Max in Maui way the fuck back when (70s); he was walking toward me and danced a little jig type dance for me, dressed in his ziggyish apparel. I guess he thought I'd be impressed. Wasn't sure if he was hitting on me, so I mimicked perfectly the steps he had done and then walked right past him like 'you ain't that special, pal.' He floated around Maui doing so much blow and blatantly throwing $100 bills at everyone he met that his publicists had to start a rumor that the guy who did all that was a David Bowie impersonator.
