I thought he left after his last eighties disco album.

Jezuz, the NYT is treating this like a major cultural icon died. Major statesmen have gotten less obit space. Somebody tell them Studio 54 closed a long time ago.

Damn, you know your getting old when your hero's start to pass on. And while his music didn't appeal to me as much once he moved away from RR, I always thought the guy had a ton of class and style. RIP Major Tom

Aww man. Sad news. I freaking loved David Bowie as a kid. Guy really put the "art" in musical artist for sure. Odd timing, I was actually just about to pull the trigger on this vinyl box set they just came out with not too long ago: http://davidbowie.com/fiveyears/

Sad news for sure and a bit of a surprise given his latest album just released.

So many great songs, such a constantly evolving artist. RIP Ziggy.

Dude, he was a major cultural icon. The subtext to this eulogy is that American mainstreamish culture doesn't have music celebrities with much artistic weight anymore. Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus vs Lennon and Bowie?

I'm not at all arguing there aren't fantastic musical artists today. I listen to them all the time. But the intersection between mainstream and high culture is sparsely populated these days.

STFU Benny. Bowie was an artist in every sense of the word, who arguably has made a bigger, longer lasting impression on modern music (ie post-60s) than the Rolling Stones.

    Thanks for the effort, Starman.

    He was pretty major...

An envelope pusher that set the stage for rock and pop for a generation

For me one of the guys I never listed as a favorite but can recognize most of his songs and know most of the words to his greatest hits album.

The first concert I ever went to was Bowie on the Glass Spider tour in 1987. Probably his worst album, but still, fantastic.

Part of the soundtrack to my life growing up. RIP.

Agreed. Can't say I've followed his recent music much, but who cares? The man wrote some of the greatest music in the last 50 years. He was an icon and deservedly so.

It appears it was planned that way.
David Bowie's last release, Lazarus, was 'parting gift' for fans in carefully planned finale
The producer of Blackstar confirms David Bowie had planned his poignant final message, and videos and lyrics show how he approached his death

His death hit me in a strange way when I heard about his passing this am. I heard one of his songs yesterday while driving and thought " he's prolly gonna die soon." Fuck! I hate it when that shit happens. There was no mention of his death then, apparently the song was just on the playlist.

I encountered Bowie at a bar named the Blue Max in Maui way the fuck back when (70s); he was walking toward me and danced a little jig type dance for me, dressed in his ziggyish apparel. I guess he thought I'd be impressed. Wasn't sure if he was hitting on me, so I mimicked perfectly the steps he had done and then walked right past him like 'you ain't that special, pal.' He floated around Maui doing so much blow and blatantly throwing $100 bills at everyone he met that his publicists had to start a rumor that the guy who did all that was a David Bowie impersonator.

Seriously? In retrospect It was clearly written about his impending death. Maybe not even in retrospect? I bet anyone that listened to it before he went toes up must have thought "it's all a bit morbid?".

Not really a fan, but the guy was clearly an amazing talent.

Yeah, it was a bit of a surprise to me since I just heard that the album was released on Friday - I'm not exactly current on music happenings since Kurt Loder stopped providing them. Reading everything today about it and this news seems to make a lot more sense though.
