What's going on here? Too many Internet nerds in Eastern Sierra? This thread used to be the best part of TGR.

Tele bowl is actually skiing really well. Tree skiing in the Sherwins is good to go, some wind board on the more exposed stuff, still pretty thin in the lower half. The negatives are still very thin.

Had a really good day out of Twin Lakes Wednesday. It started with a debate as it was lightly snowing and the wind had much more of a bite than expected. Almost bailed and went to VA Lakes to keep it easy but we were feeling spry so we continued with the original plan. The idea was to head up and hit a classic but as we would find out the wind had its way with anything on that side of the canyon. Good news was that the forecast held true and the clouds pealed back affording us a bluebird day.

The aprons are stripped to the talus fields so our choice was a good one in hindsight. The couloirs looked pretty beat up by the wind as well.

We got a bit further up the canyon and found exactly the type of line we were looking for on a protected east aspect

    .

There was debris on similar aspects that suggested things slid to the ground in the big wet storm a couple weeks back. As we were a bit unsure if there may be a PWL at the bottom of the pack we got to digging. Turns out that on the apron the snowpack was deep enough that we couldnt find the bottom with the probe. Dug a pit down to roughly a meter deep and found nothing but uniform and settled snow. As such we proceeded to switch over to booting mode. After a beautiful climb we made some turns.

Chalky snow at the top transitioned to nicely settled powder through the gut of the line.

Just made it back across Robinson Creek before the sun faded over the mountains. Found our in track and cruised the last couple miles back to the car via headlamp. Hit the hot tub on the way back to Tahoe and called it a day well spent.

Its worth noting that overall coverage on any aspect not stripped by the wind is pretty good. From what we saw anything that hadnt been battered was still nice cold and settled powder. Horse creek up towards the Matterhorn and all that jazz seemed to have the best overall coverage. Twin Peaks area looked pretty good as well. I should have snapped a couple of pictures of coverage from afar but spaced on it. Also worth noting is the fact that the Topaz Casino $6 steak and eggs definitely justifies the pit stop.

Yes, but bigger pics please. They're barely bigger than an avatar! Can't believe how bad the apron on the hulk looks. The lookers left cooly always looks bad but I've never seen the looker right completely bare like that considering there's actually a somewhat decent snowpack down there.

Yea when I did it I had the same thought. To be honest I am ignorant as to how to do that. BG if you want to PM me some instructions on that I will happily make the pictures bigger for you on the next one.

Drove up 395 this afternoon and was amazed at how boney things are down south. A few ravines might hold enough snow to ski, but over all it still looks pretty stripped. Winds must have brutal, but select protected areas night be money.

I agree it is a constitutional right for Americans to be assholes...its just too bad that so many take the opportunity...

Drove up New Years day. Was expecting a lot more snow. Really disappointed from Mammoth to Virginia Lakes. Still needs a few feet.

    Just north of Independence

    Basin

    Esha

    Tom

After seeing the Bad I was wondering if I should have stayed home. But friends arrived earlier and had scouted some lines hidden around Virginia Lakes, we lapped low angle trees and every turn was cold smoke

the background in the last photo will show you had bad the coverage is as of 1-3-16

Wow - I had just assumed that the Bishop area had been getting some significant coverage out of these storms. I suppose I should have been watching the weather forecasts more closely. Thanks for the pics.

Tex said those pics were taken new years day. They've had their most significant storm of the season after that so I'm sure things are much better now.

Sadly it's still very thin south of Mammoth. Around Bishop, Table Mountain, Bishop Bowl, and such are not skiable. Back further in the Wahoo zone might work, but rocky for sure. Even Rock Creek, McGee, and Convict are not really happening. Where there is snow - around Mammoth mainly - the skiing is excellent. Dunno about further north, but the general consensus is it's better.

Skied around Punta Bardini and Solitude this weekend. It was fantastic in the trees. But it also felt sketchy on rollovers and wind affected above treeline. It was great skiing, but conditions felt a little low tide overall, and things did not look great to the south. We need another storm or two to fill everything in.

Friday- Old Growth/Tele Bowl in Mammoth. Really good stable snow with enough base. no one else out except for 1 skier. got both bowls with no tracks. Bardini had been getting skied but still looked tricky and low tide as did much of the Sherwins.

convict lake area is still not rideable, but I heard pinner, old mans and Morrison col got skied a couple weeks ago before the good snow blew away.

Saturday - warm and wet. mammoth rock and the loop had wet snow so we bailed and climbed at the Happy Boulders.

Sunday - Lake Sabrina - ended up being an out and back across the lake. Too bony out there for us to chance it. Got turns on the road with just enough snow to do it.

coverage looked pretty good out of Virginia Lakes and Bridgeport and good around June out to Wood. Lee vining maybe still a bit thin???

27" on the South Lake snotel since yesterday (9600'). I can only imagine what the totals are above 12k. Looks like Lone Pine to Bridgeport is good to go this spring.

In Bishop area folks have skied Tom, Wahoo, Bishop Bowl, and other zones. Table Mtn and lower elevation still pretty marginal. Wind affected high and/or exposed. Great skiing where sheltered. Tide is still fairy low most areas, but in general, game on!

    ^^^Good to hear.

Any guesses as to how east-facing slopes between June and Tioga will ski this weekend? Looks like it will be warm and mostly sunny for the next couple days.

Skied the North Couloir on Mt Lewis today. It was chalky, then variable, and then breakable crust on the apron. Creamy pow in the northeast trees. I wanted to summit but it was a little wet slidey, so I just skied the little chute below, which was fun. Will post photos later.
