Planning to spend the last week of April out there, hoping to link up with some peeps. Will arrive around the 23rd/24th and depart May 1st/2nd. Not super familiar with the eastside from a skiing perspective, my only exposure was a trip to the Mosquito Flat yurt a couple years ago. But I'll be in decent enough shape from ski touring in Colorado all season. I've got my avy level 2, and I like big days followed by cold beers. Cheers.

Damn it looks good up there. I have not been on snow this season. Freakin Plantar issues started up in September and Im still limping , unable to do any running or skinning
What a horrible year to be off snow.
Rando D - I know Nat was skinning home from the Brewery in that photo. Going to have to hook up with you two in April .
Lets put together another season ending condo bash

My second flair up. First time insoles fixed it. I went a good five years no issues. Ran 4-5 times a week
This time? Insoles, cortisone, rest, ice........still no relief.

That brings back painful memories. Mine got so bad it would take at least 30 minutes every morning before I could put my heels on the ground, I was forced to tip-toe around until the muscles warmed up. I remember getting up in the middle of the night to take a leak, hopping out of bed, and basically dropping to the ground because of the pain. I didn't take the rehab very seriously and kept running around the crags in flip flops instead of approach shoes, always getting pointy rocks to push through the shitty soles directly into my heel. I learned many new curse words during that time.
What eventually saved me, besides not running ever, were multiple daily sessions of rolling a frozen water bottle under my heel, something I hated with fiery passion but really helped. Also, doing toe curls with a theraband for resistance.
Fix yo feet so you can shred the Sierras!

Just catching up to this thread...
Doc, great TR from Feb. I think you guys win the prize for the highest quality+quantity TR's on this thread (similar to Gimpy on the Tahoe thread). Thanks for posting!
Pajama's, TahoeBC, brian - thanks for posting the great beta shots. things look pretty nice this year (as expected).
thefrush, i'm going to start migrating south for 2-4 day weekend trips to the east side soon. Plans are all weather/work dependent, but when i go i'll post here if anyone wants to meet up.
Anyone have any recent beta on snowline near Bigpine roadside attractions (tinemaha/split, etc?)
Brian, how was the roads for emerson/buttermilks/Basin/Tom, etc?

Drove from Reno down to So Cal last week and got a few pics I thought were worth posting. It had just stopped snowing, and with gale force winds blowing every peak had a standing plume of snow off of it. Absolutely gorgeous drive down 395 and it was hard to keep my eyes on the road. I didn't ski any of them, other than Mammoth. From North to South here they are.
East face of Mt Wood.
McGee Mtn was buzzing with activity. Lots of tracks, both ski and snowmobile. Note the snow mobile track leading into the slide in the gulley. Lots of cars were staged along Crowley Lake Drive, half of them with guys standing next to them scoping out lines with binoculars.
Mayfield Couloir, Wheeler Crest. 5000 vert feet.
Mt Tom taken from the pull out on Sherwin Grade. Visually it's one of my favorite mtns. Been to the top of it once in the Summer, never tried it in the winter.
Stopped at the Fort Independence casino for gas. Not sure what the mtns are down here, possibly Independence Peak and Kearsarge Peak? Let me know.
Same as above, just zoomed in a little more. Awesome views all the way down to 395.Last edited by Eastern Sierra Skier; 03-21-2019 at 12:34 PM.

Nice pics, thanks ESS.
I do, it was actually the first guidebook I ever bought. I also figure there won't be many high elevation TH's open by the time I am down there but I know there is still plenty to ski and I don't mind long approaches. Been putting in double-digit mileage and 4k+ days here in CO.((. The joy I get from skiing...

Abe: Coverage is pretty damn good around Big Pine. Was down there Saturday. That said, it was hot and I'm sure the snow level has risen at least a few hundred feet since then. Still, now's a good time to hit Cardinal, Split, Tinemaha, Birch, etc.
Anyhow, I guess I've got a backlog.

Wow, Fantastic pics ESS! That’s just the info I was looking for, Thanks! The access to Tom looks perfect (drive high enough, but still ski close to the car w/o walking), And from your Kearsarge pic, I’d guess the same for other stuff down there.
Regarding high elevation trailheads – They try their best to get some of them open by “Fishmas” (AKA fishfest, AKA the fishing opener), like Virginia lakes, etc. So you might want to check the website before you write them off completely. But yeah, I’d bet a lot won’t be open until May (And Tioga until June? July?)…
AKB – That’s great that ya got your little one to the top of Whitney at age 12(wow!).. Mine are 8 & 6, so I’ll use your TR to shame my kids to get in to better shape . We did a ~2k hike on Crater Lake a few years ago, so maybe they’re on the right path… Just need to keep them away from “Minecraft”…
Thanks for Big pine beta and pics! Ahh, the palisades—pure awesomeness. Looks like you skied off the ridge between Kidd and Thumb? Steep. Well done.
SOO STOKED to go down there now, maybe the weekend after next… Tahoe’s been outstanding recently, but this time of the year I get the urge to migrate south to see the big mtns. Love every turn of the drive down there. Love the first time you see bloody come into view. That little barn in front of Gibbs, mt. Tom coming into view... Love walking around bishop and thinking “this is the worst place to live” and then 10 seconds later “this is the best place to live!”. Getting in the hot springs and looking at the mountain you skied after a big day. Goin' to the The Tioga Mo-mart for dinner and perhaps the associated JimW sighting. Leaving the car at 4am freezing, but skiing down to the car at 2 and it’s 75F with the sun warming your face as ya drink your beer and watch the tumbleweeds... The High sierra in April/May. Love everything about it – no better place on earth.

Eastside Conditions Thread
variable? net fun. for the first thousand feet or so off the summit the conditions were beautiful warm pow. things deteriorated quickly to heinous old avy debris, but there was still fun corn to be had on the apron. (pinner not mendahall, m looks in and like it would go clean. considered it but seemed too aggressive solo)

In the Eastern Sierra, you can back off your intended line at 8:30 a.m., drive for 45 minutes, and "settle" for a 6,000' couloir.
Eastern Sierra Skier has a clear photo of the line above.
Mt. Morgan v.2 in the background.
Giddy up.

Conditions were good.

That was Saturday.
On Sunday we wanted north Wood, but the winds were pretty wild on Saturday afternoon and evening and conditions seemed weird as we approached.
So we audibled to this pleasant run on Lewis.
We got windblown powder, transitional but fun snow, and fantastic corn. It's kind of a schlep, but a fun run.

Just got back from three days at the Virginia Lakes Yurt with Sierra Snowcats., can't recommend them enough, and a tr with pics is coming. Just a quick up date, the road is nowhere near plowed and doesnt look like any plans soon, no surprise. The Lundy Lake road is plowed, at least part way. Havent been up it, but you can see it from the Crest between canyons. North facing above a bit under 10,000 is skiing like cream cheese, soft smooth and wonderful. South facing is starting to corn up, but varies with altitude. The top of the southeast? couloir of Dunderberg was firm at the top, smooth chalk in the middle and corn at the bottom . Look I to the north couloir from the summit and on the skin up from Snow Lake, and it is fat.
Last run of the trip was from the ridge off Olsen(? I need to look at a map) all the way to 395 was skiable, pow up high, a short transition the corn for miles. Skied to the road, but it was going fast.
I agree it is a constitutional right for Americans to be assholes...its just too bad that so many take the opportunity...iscariot
