Seasonal clearing of mountain roadway passes is underway in Caltrans District 9. This video of State Route 120 west of Lee Vining commonly known as Tioga Pass shows how this year’s deep, icy snow is a difficult task for even the largest of our equipment and the most skilled equipment operators. In the process of clearing the snow, crews uncover damage that has happened over the winter due to falling rocks, trees, snow and ice. Roads, guardrail, culverts, drains, and signs are evaluated for repairs. After the snow has been cleared and the necessary repairs have been made, Caltrans evaluates the current conditions of the pass and will open the gate to the public when it is safe to do so. For current road conditions visit the Caltrans QuickMap web page at quickmap.dot.ca.gov or call the Road Condition Hotline at 1-800-427-ROAD (7623). https://youtu.be/CwfK5qr0bto

It's road plowing season in Yosemite! While road crews have made it to Glacier Point, much work remains before the Glacier Point Road can open (there is no estimate yet).
Meanwhile, crews working on Tioga Road have plowed several miles from Tuolumne Grove (near Crane Flat), with snow depths around five to seven feet.
We'll have regular updates here, but may provide more frequent updates at https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/tioga.htm.I didn't believe in reincarnation when I was your age either.

Just looking through the last 2-3 weeks on this thread and the quality and quantity of great posts and pics blows me away. Thanks Climbereleven, Rod, 2_1_3 (sweet Gutter pic!), Jskierpx, Jack Burton, Meter-man, Whatsupdoc and AKbruin(you guys are running out of lines to ski , Pajamas, BFD, Brianburke(great viddy of Split) !!!
Regarding:
Looks awesome. Soda shaq huh? When I google it, this is what comes up cracked me up.
Such a talented guy, basket ball, even soda... His true gift was acting though...
Brian, i'm envious of your S. Side of Split - great video. We went there on Monday (day after you i think) based on the forecast supposedly being warmer/better for corn, but you picked the right day. Saw your tracks...
Whatsupdoc, AKbruin, i have no idea how you guys manage so many hall passes from the wives and work, but your work in the High Sierra is proud stuff. You guys take really good pics too. Doc, your black and white of Red Slate is $$$
single pic (for me) that says what the High Sierra is all about(below). Blue sky's, great corn, beautiful background. all that's missing from this pic is the beer, but i'll assume that's what in the Camel back.
Thanks for the road beta Mikey B. So glad Walker Burger is open (thank you Fishmas weekend for making this happen). They have the best shakes for the final stretch of the drive back to Sac… not to mention the Momart for dinner. Looking forward to tomorrow.

Thanks Doc.
Oh, and AKBruin, I empathize with you on your weather troubles from your Nth attempt on the Z. We had some of the same last weekend. . We went down to big pine to do the S slide of Split on Monday after tooling around in Convict Sunday. The forecast said Monday was the day: warmer, sunny vs. partly cloudy and colder on Sunday. Even did the 3am start just in case it got warmer than planned.
Started out great, clear sky:
Some clouds to the east, no biggie
WTF!
We got to 11k before 8am fearing the sun’s effect, and everything was on track for the final 3k of climbing. Instead the clouds fully engulfed Split. We sat on the rocks and waited for 2? 3? hrs for them to burn off. I actually put on my down jacket and slept for a full hour, hoping Sherpa1 would wake me and say “it’s time to go, sun's coming out”, but that didn’t happen.
The Cardinal/Split Cirque isn’t a bad place to hang out.
Finally at around 11am we pulled the ripcord and headed over to ski the N couloir on Cardinal. Didn't want to ski 3k ft of frozen/bullet proof in a whiteout.
The North chute of Cardinal is awesome (continuously steep and longer than it looks). It was cool, but after paying the heavy “shwack factor tax” that’s due on the lower approach currently, was bummed we didn’t get Split.
Here’s a pic of cardinal from Tinimaha from the 13’th:
It was a great ski. We skied form the top of the fat part, opting not to ski the skinny and steeper top part from the ridge.
It was 1-3 inches of softer wintery snow ontop of some more consolidated wintery snow pack. some of these pics are from Sherpa1:
By the time we finished skiing the chute the sun was starting to come out and we skied corn pretty much down to about 8000ft. As Brian said, you ski to the cross over point/snow bridge at about 7500ft or so.
If you do this area, I’d do it sooner than later. And don’t underestimate the time for the “rough trail” before you hit snow. It’s not as bad as some other places in the Sierra (i.e. AKB’s Lone Pine pk adventure), but be ready for it.
Because of that, I’d say If you do cardinal’s north side, I’d highly recommend doing it early in the year. I’m sure the S.side of split you have to wait long enough in the year until the S face gets’s enough melt/freeze cycles up high, and put up with the resulting dry trail and bushwacking, but all I know is that when we did Cardinal back in early April 2010, we skinned from the car and didn’t have to deal with any of that. totally different experience. Maybe some slight willow battles, but nothing like you have when booting from the trail.
Oh, and I met some of the locals:
And ladies, if your Cougar weekend is still on, here's a beta shot of the access (pic from Monday):

Nice job Abe. I'd say skiing that couloir is equal to bagging Split. It's a classic in it's own right. The one time I did it I stopped at the choke too as it was crusty, hairball gnar above the wide point.

Abe, how many miles on dirt for Cardinal?
Eastern Sierra guidebook shows 9 miles or so of approach, which is more than i like in a day.

Thanks BGnight.
Rod, i'd say it's only 1-1.5 miles max on the trail, and ~1300ft of gain. The problem is that it's over scree/sand/boulders/through willows/up/down...etc. Several places it got washed/out by the avy debris, making losing and re-finding the trail occur under headlamp. Not a problem if you prepare and account for it. Probably worth it for the S. Side of split, but for Cardinal and it's northerly descents, you can go earlier in the season and avoid the whole mess.
the 9 miles must be the whole route. And either of these routes are 7.5k+ ft days. we had 1000+ft of great couloir + ~4500-5000+ft of great corn

Mr. Hankey, Cardinal is a super worthy objective and is very high on my list. Great photos and great job!

Did the Evolution Loop out of Sabrina last week. Getting lost a few times and getting caught in a storm last Saturday lead to our group spending 6 days out there in the Sierra. It wasn't the ski trip I had hoped for in the sense of getting a few objectives checked off, but it was surprisingly rewarding as a mental "reset" button. Nothing like getting away from civilization to get in touch with your own humanity. Great experience.

Mr. Hankey - What a bummer to have to settle for Cardinal N chute as a consolation prize for S face of Split! (where is my sarcasm emoticon...) Just imagine, if you didn't take that 3 hour nap/break, you prolly could have gotten a couple more Cardinal chutes in!
But seriously. Nice work! That's another one one the someday list...
I kinda hate looking at this thread because it induces so much FOMO, but OTOH so much stoke here! Trying to get out there for an extended period in May (via the quit-yer-job approach)... just hope everything doesn't have moguls by then!
Mo-mart opened today...

Second-hand info from yesterday. Buffy the Couloir Slayer rode 3rd Pillar:
Rock in the choke is completely covered:
Apparently there was a previous wet slide down low past the dogleg, and there were nasty refrozen runnels due to that, so after riding the good part she climbed back out and they rode Powerhouse to the road. Looks super fat out there...
