Eastside Conditions Thread
Need to see some June mtn picts of trenches on the face.
Whorl has been on my list. Friends and i considered it a while back from horse creek, but from inspection, the long looking exposed 3rd class approach made us change our minds that trip.

Spent a few days on the east side the week of Jan 27-Feb 1. Here are some pics.
Day 1 I teamed up with AKbruin. We skied the June Lake area. Great day, bluebird, mostly good snow, and some cool lines.
Finally above Yost Creek:

Climbing down into the second line, the Fern Grotto:

Day 2 I skied the Doodad Col with a buddy from out of town. The day started nice enough but it quickly got socked in and the light was flat most of the day. The snow up high was a little variable and the flat light made it very difficult in open terrain. Mid elevation slopes were still great pow.

Day 3 we went out to the Four Gables area. We started later than we should have and it was a lot further than expected. Cool zone, I would like to go back in the spring. Getting up the lower canyon was tedious, lots of steep sidehilling on somewhat rotten sun-exposed snow. One of those places where it's probably easier just to dry hike the summer trail come springtime. Light was once again very flat which made for challenging skiing, but it was cool to check out a new zone.
Getting out there:
We skied the prominent U shaped notch just to the left of the skier near the center of this photo:
More photos of the approach since the skiing was mediocre:

Looking back up into the clouds:
The next day we went out to try Red Slate. We bailed about 30% of the way up the couloir as the snow was very firm. The approach was beautiful. The mission wasn't technically a success but still a great day out. I'm looking forward to heading back.
Some scenic shots from that day:

Thx for the great report. Now I have a better idea where the fern chute is.
I know it was over a week ago but how did crater crest look.
I'm headed down for the entire week. Monday looks to be the best day. Actually hope it doesn't snow too much.
Also, anyone been out glacier road lately and get a look at kid mountain?

Coverage looked pretty damn good when I was down there, and that was before this last big storm cycle.
Crater Crest looked decent. Ridges were wind scoured but the 2 main lines seemed to go. I'm sure it's much better off now.
Gilcrest looked well filled in. The 2 NE facing couloirs went.
I skied to the road in Twin Lakes, same with Four Gables. Convict had snow to the car, save for a few bare spots along the summer trail.
I didn't make it south of Pine Creek. But I imagine Kidd is good to go after this last cycle.
Have fun down there.

I’m planning on being on the eastside Friday through Sunday if anybody is looking for partners. I’m hoping to do coke chute Friday and then probably proceed south from there the next two days.

check on the plowing status for 120. it wasn't plowed past the usfs station on Saturday and looked like it hadn't been plowed in a while.

we had a great but challenging week on the east side. hard to complain with snow on a ski trip, but we were wishing for some good weather to tour in the alpine more. we toured 2 days at Red Mountain, Bardini Canyon, Scenic Loop stashes. Also got a day in Tahoe near Echo and yesterday off Luther pass. The two rain days really bit into our ski days.

Didn't get to halls.
Doc, your TR and pics are really good. I put in less effort on photos every year.
That pic of the south facing chute into Lundy!!!

Attempted to ski coke chute today, hoping for pow. The wind was out of south all week right? Bailed when we lost vis when at the base of getting steep and I didn’t really feel like climbing more for shit snow.
Suncrust, windcrust, transitional pow, breakable crust, sastrugi, wind board...kind of all over the place.
On just the right aspects there was fun knee-high pow for 1000’ or so in v bowl, so that was a nice consolation.
Nice adventure, can’t wait to go back and hopefully find better snow.
