My worry is endless bushwacking by the Creek. Does anyone know if there's a trail there?

The road gets you most of the way back then Google shows a trail to at least green lake and then you're out of the bushwhack zone. i'm not familiar with green creek road in the winter but it seems like you might get back further on virginia lakes depending on stuff

Yes, I saw the trail as well.
I'm thinking of April, may, so you can drive a fair amount on the road to the campground.
Virginia peak is one of the best skis I've done in the Sierras.
Steep, but but a lot of exposure. Which I like.

Haven't done Virginia Pk (and damn is that thing sexy!!), but it seems like another option would be up and over Twin Peaks out of Horse Creek. Not sure if the S side of Twin goes through though.

I don’t think you can get far up Green Creek Rd in winter.
I didn't believe in reincarnation when I was your age either.

To ski it in the winter va lakes is the standard. After skiing va peak, the cool kids go up to ski twin peaks and then all the way down horse creek to a waiting shuttle car at twin lakes. It's right there with just a bit more climbing and negates the up n down return slog to va lakes.
Just drove up 395 and everything above 9k looks above average for November.

That's a pretty long day if you skin first to VA lakes, then Virginia peak, perhaps break trail.

The lack of posts has me worried. How are the backcountry conditions lately? Mammoth crest or Virginia lakes?

These are from Sunday at VA lakes, i mucked around for a couple hours in the main bowl, good to be outside but I would not go to far out of the way for it - first shot left of the road, the north line looks to go, i did not head up that way but assume the snow is edgable Here are a couple from the main bowl area just above the end of the VA lakes road.
Like I told my last wife, I never drive faster than I can see, besides it's all in the reflexes.

Any word on where snow levels were during this last storm? Looks like more snow south of Tahoe, considering a quick run to VA Lakes or the like this weekend. Or did it all melt out last two weeks?

Yikes, some folks had a real close call about a week ago. Props to them for sharing. Like many (most?) accidents, especially in mountains, there is a tendency for multiple smaller bad judgements/errors to accumulate into a sketchy situation. Stay vigilant!
