Get him one of these. I don't know how bright they are though. Never tried one myself.

    Head Lamp

Try a headlamp. My favorite brand is Black Diamond.

Besides the, ahem, lovely suggestions above, I'd second a headlamp. Black diamonds are great. I love to have one with a red light setting for night.

Black diamond headlamps are great but till recently many of their older models lacked LED regulation so the drop in brightness was significant after a few hours. I just got a replacement Storm (the hinge on my old one went bonkers) and the new one with regulated output has outperformed by old by by head and shoulders. The design of the new Storm and Spot are "meh" IMO and I think they should have stuck to the previous design which was absolutely gorgeous

    BUMP.

Maglite mini I use at work everyday died. I like it, lasted 5 years, but I think there must be something better out there.

    Looking for the following:

    - Similar form factor as a maglite mini 2AAA (aka slightly slimmer than a cigar, fits in a pen pocket)
    - Able to focus the light for inspection of an item or spread the light for general vision.
    - Don't need different brightness's, strobe, colors, or any bullshit.

What is a good brand to look at?

The headlights(BD, Eveready) are handy...lets one carry additional any large halogen. Using the BD's red light to commune with the sasquatches?...MsShasta

I got a Gentos and love it. Tint and diffusion are king in lanterns for me.

    Good Flashlight

Jetbeam BA10. Uses one AA and very reasonable Price. I was eating up with CR batteries and probably have enough to power a football stadium. Your comments about the availability of certain batteries during Sandy has encouraged my decision for getting some AA lights. This is not a individual AA but uses four is the Nitecore EA4. Between the BA10 and the EA4, this gives me the AA battery benefits. I use Eneloop rechargeables. Also, have a car charger and a solar charger for the AA's if wanted. Just a thought.

There's a reason why Streamlight is the choice of Fire and Police guys. They're the best.

Surefire comes in second. Fenix and Supernova arent far behind

I bought an Oracle xenon flashlight at 4wheelonline. A bit pricey but extremely bright and waterproof.
