first, sorry you're going through this. As much as I am happy to be divorced, it's not easy, but it was 100000% the right decision for me.

second, make sure you have custody of your son.

My dads first wife remarried money. To get in on the cash my half brother had to change his last name.
My brother resents it but I don’t. Not at all. What’s in a name?

I have asked this question of men in 2nd/3rd/etc. marriages who said something like, "well, she said it marriage or nothing" and I'm thinking, "ummmmm......nothing?.....ultimatum much?"

    No thanks!

Mine stated in the divorce papers she was going back to her maiden name. Not sure if she did, don't really care EXCEPT for the kind of message it would send to the kids.

Friend of mine husband died of heart attack. She changed her name back to maiden because her husbands dad is redneck MAGA guy. Kids kept the name and all is well, their choice. Seems like a decent message to me.

The wife knows a gal whose husband's surname is Trump (no relation to President Spay Tan). About a year ago the whole family, including him, changed their names to her maiden name.

Ha, I know a cousin of Rush Limbaugh. She changed her last name after he became a thing.

My Ex kept my last name. She's a teacher and thought it would just be easier for everybody- especially our kids.

Tammy Wynette cannot be reached for help-Divorce advice

I don’t care what her last name is. Fucked up in the extreme, however, to introduce the idea to the kids that she would approve if they were able to change their last name to reflect hers. Had a bit of a moment when I told the kids they can do whatever they want when they are 18, but that I wouldn’t sign off on changing their name before then and I wasn’t going to take it well if they seriously thought they would like to no longer share my name. (They don’t seriously think that. They’re little kids, ferfucksake.)

We kind of share dog custody (broadly, they follow the kids). I’m the one who takes the dogs to the vet. She changed the name on the account to her maiden name so the dogs all had her last name. Little bit of confusion when I called to set up appointments.

It’s not like my last name is Asslorde or something..... tempted to casually suggest that maybe we should hyphenate her last name, my last name, and my girlfriend’s last name all together. See how that is received. (I would never....)
    focus.

Arent there a lot of financial benefits to being married?

Especially as you age with estate taxes and benefits being available to the spouse as well?
