I'm having an ongoing discussion with my mother, of all people, as to what constitutes "family." It's tiring.
My take is anyone whom I consider to be family... is my family. Period, blood relative or not, "once removed" or not, IDGAF. Your "legal definition" because you're a fucking lawyer has absolutely nothing to do with it.

The lawyer in question is my mother. FML.
"Why do you spend so much time/money on XXX?" "Well, they're family." "No, legally they're not." I love you mom but STFU.
Right on. My feelings in a nutshell. I have 1st cousins I haven't heard from ever in my life. I have friends whose loss would shatter me.

Well, my particular relative doesn't call the cops on his family members, it's more likely they'll call the cops on him. Lifelong alcoholic always looking for the easy way out. "Why should I [insert request he wishes me to grant]?" "Because I'm your brother." or, better yet, "I'd do it for you." It's both laughable and tragic at the same time to watch someone you grew up with throw away their life and end up on the streets (though he hasn't quite run out of people willing to enable him yet).
Bottom line for me is - you don't get to choose your blood relations and just because they share genetic material with you doesn't make you obligated to them in any way. This isn't the Paleolithic period any more, family groups don't have to rely on each other for survival and if we still did someone like my brother would've been cast out.

Well, I haven't communicated with any "blood relative" for over a year, since we are sharing. The positive change that choosing that path brought into my life is immeasurable.
That said, I do not think I would refuse to help a family member in need if I was able.
Enabling someone is not helping them, though.

The shit head calling the cops on the sisters is what has me wondering. Usually it's the other way around.
