dam, such a good weekend. Missed Friday and after seeing the pics of friends, glad I did. Sat was really fun, Scarlet > Fire for opening was hot. Fire is wifes fave song and it was her birthday. She called the opener.

Maybe this is well know, but it’s new to me. THIS is why D&C is not, and will never be, TGD.

I feel like such a loser, the boys just played 4 good shows within an hour or so of my house and it wasn't in the budget so I didn't go to any of them. It's 35 years (and a few months) since I saw my first show and it was at Nassau Coliseum.

Both David Gans and Gary Lambert, (about as in depth of knowledge as you’ll find, IMO), have mentioned multiple times when asked the question. Now I could certainly be slightly off but from what my ears have heard when listening to Tales From the Golden Road is the boys likely started with rough outlines when Keith joined the band. Not sure how that evolved. Same when Brent came on. Sounds to me like they became more rigid with the sets. The hosts never seem to say exactly when they used them or that it happened every night. More so, they indicate the band used set lists as a tool to help the new guys develop. Shit, I can’t imagine coming into a band with that extensive of a catalog.
While I don’t recall those guys talking much about the Hornsby/Vince era as it pertains to set lists I’m gonna take a guess that they had something to work off of most shows.
If my memory serves me right, Big Steve Parish also talks about formation of set lists in his book. Could be dreaming there tho.

No first hand knowledge but I’d put my $ on the GD used set lists at least as a guideline for a decent chunk of their touring history. Just my .02. Doesn’t really matter to me though. I loved the shit out of every show I saw, even the really bad nights at the end.

^^^thats always been my understanding. Bob and Jerry would discuss the first few songs of the first set before heading on stage and might actually follow that. Similar to opening of the second set.

Of course by the late 80s, the sets were pretty well structured but they still weren’t using a list of the entire show taped to the stage like most other bands of the era.

I grew up a mile and a half from the coliseum (closer for a while) and used to walk there as a kid, saw lots of shows there and felt bad when they played there as well and didn't go, but by then (mid 80's) I wasn't going to NY shows anymore (and nothing but outdoor shows later on). I think by then it was harder getting tickets outside the shows and the parking lot wasn't as much fun with constant police presence in many places (coliseum included).

In the later shows (after Brent) there was definitely more of a set list than before Brent, and later on when Garcia was having trouble even more of "this is probably what were playing tonight".

Tour is back on. I’m hitting up ATL for sure but those Wrigley shows have me thinking about a road trip.
I still call it The Jake.
