My old man's 1st gen Allroad was totaled due to damage from a clogged cowl drain. Thing was cherry otherwise. I bet there are others like it sitting in a junkyard ready to be brought back to life.
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.

And yet all those cities do nearly nothing to help slow expansion and single user commuter cars. Freedumb yo.
Don't get me wrong, emissions regulations are great but American culture will continue a path of destruction no matter what weak regulations and taxes are utilized.

"Congestion Pricing" that's going into effect in NYC might be a gamechanger once other cities see the money they're leaving on the table. Theoretically they're going to take the toll money and put it straight into mass transit, seems pretty much win-win unless you have no other than driving way to get to work, and even then there's probably workarounds for almost everyone who doesn't want to pay the toll.

Lemme guess, it was a tiptronic? Cowl drain issue is common, but very easily avoided. Water ends up entering thru the cabin air filter, thru the blower motor and onto the passenger side footwell. The tiptronic tcu sits under the passenger seat and gets shorted. Pain in the ass, but not too expensive to fix with a used tcu.

Yep, that was it. Insurance paid out more than the thing was worth, so he took the money and ran. It was a sweet car, but was becoming a money pit. The saddest part is that he went and bought a 2nd gen Prius with that money. He's never admitted that the Prius was a bad decision, but the fact that he replaced it with an E 450 speaks volumes.

If a turbo German car actually makes it to 94k miles without a major electric issue or engine failure it is a victory

I had the Exahaust temp sensors replaced with these. Wasn't about to shell out 400 bucks for a sensor

^^ Thanks. I was considering just coding out the EGT's, which would basically do the same thing as those delete plugs, but think that I'm just going to order a replacement board for the sensor. I spent some time looking around last night and it looks like the reason they fail is because moisture eventually gets into the board and the vibrations end up breaking the solder joints which causes the intermittent short to positive. There is a guy in poland who sells the boards for about the same price as the delete plugs, but still retain full functionality instead of tricking the ECU to believe that the exhaust gas temp is within an acceptable range.
Some details on the repair process and a source for the parts here:

I'm pretty sure whenever I hear the term "normal maintenance" for european cars it really means "I could afford the repairs".
But man they sure do drive nice.Live Free or Die

^^ I considered replacing the boards. I opted for the deletes, shop I take mine to didn't recommend one over the other. I had them installed in January and haven't had a CEL since, which actually may be a record for this Allroad

Up coming, I know my cat is dying and will need to be replaced at some point. In CA it has to be an OEM part which is about $2k installed. My current registration doesn't require a smog cert, so for the following year there may be a hard decision to make on a car with close to 200k on it at that point. I mean a $2k charge for the Cat is retarded.

A skilled mechanic crook can probably get it done quickly too

I think my Volvo's got a bad cat too. Pretty ridiculous to have to waste that kind of money on an old car that has an engine that's running like a champ. I refuse. Thankfully I don't have to deal with smog check, but could you just use an OBDII scanner to clear the CEL right before getting your inspection done?
