My son now drives my old ‘13 allroad. 165k-ish on the clock.

A few weeks back a coil went bad. Poor kid thought he blew up the engine, and left it on a side road out in the boonies until I was back in town to help him sort it. He drove his mom’s car, a new Outback XT, in the meantime.

He was pretty mollified when it took 10 minutes and a $25 part to fix his “blown engine.” And he was really glad to not drive the Subaru anymore because for as nice as it is, those cars are just not fun to drive.

Most don’t care. If you do, though….. I drive enough that a car being a pleasure/fun to drive is a perk I’m willing to pay for.

Get your kid an OBD2 reader, he’s probably good at googling and with a ‘13 euro car he’ll be getting a lot of use out of it

Not that he has to be the one doing the work, but it’s a start at not being wholly dependent on a mechanic

We got the call while enjoying a drink at the Mangy Moose at JHMR. There was some kind of spring break beer drinking competition going on, so it was chaos. We couldn’t hear each other and all I got was “my car’s broken and I’m getting a ride home.”

He has an OBD2 reader in the glove box, but I had to remind him later that night when I actually talked to him. By the time he got back out to the car to read the codes I was going to be back the next day and I happened to have a spare coil for that car… it has a tune and tends to eat coils.

Anyways, yeah, he learned a lot and hopefully realized a little agency to see the process of reading codes (cylinder 2 misfire), applying some critical thought and forming a theory (this car eats coils and spark plugs go bad sometimes, so let’s be ready for that too, plus all that is cheap and available at most auto parts stores), replacing/fixing according to that theory, and driving away. Coulda been something uglier but I can’t think of too many issues leading to a cylinder 2 misfire that we can fix on the side of the road that isn’t electrical. It was a nice win.

As soon as it warms up and dries out and doesn’t suck to work out on the driveway he’s got some rotors to swap in, too. We might try to chase down an evap leak code that crops up occasionally that doesn’t feel like it’s JUST the gas cap. Etc.

Audi front clip off repairs are the outdated memes of 2010.

Engine out F360 repairs are the upscale equivalent.

This looks like a pretty clean V70R M66 with only 96. Appears to be pretty well maintained with all the big 100K stuff done already. Who wants it?

That's sweet and funny - I grew up in Edmonds and my family is still there. Had a good friend who drove a Red 850-T5 that we loved to rally around in HS. He's still in Edmonds and bought his parents '06 V70R that his wife dailies; it fits three car seats in the back, no problem. I'll tempt him with this one

Assuming it’s a 2019/2020, it should have the FB engine if it’s a 4 cylinder. Those are less prone to the EJ’s head gasket issues.

Just go browse lpaventure.ca for some fun GOTOS goodies.

Real leather, not MB-Tex. Not a horrible price for the mileage and new parts. Looks well cared for.

Alright ... I'll ask a stupid question. What's the most compelling reason to black out a license plate in a pic. You think we're gonna find you? If we do, we'd probably just buy you a beer.

Welp, I can officially strike the new Outbacks off my list for my next wagon. I just rented a new, pretty loaded one in "Touring" form for about a week. Base engine, which is gutless enough for such a porky vehicle, but the CVT is every bit as lousy as the reputation had me believe. I found it mildly terrifying as I was getting on fast moving LA freeways with the controlled access lights, and while flooring it, the stupid thing would "upshift" in a herky jerky way, causing me to lose acceleration while attempting to merge. The auto-stop/start system was also godawful. I'd have my foot on the brake at a light, and when the engine would kick back on the car would want to lurch forward pretty harshly where had to press the brake in more firmly to keep me from rear-ending the car in front of me.

Then there's the overly aggressive seatbelt warning. Just trying to get through a parking lot at crawling speed? Doesn't matter. bong bong bong bong, then 5 seconds later, BONG BONG BONG BONG! Put it back in Park? Doesn't matter. BONG BONG BONG BONG! "Dammit, car! I've parked already! Lay off!" Have to click in to shut it off. Glitchy ass Eyesight is also pretty agro. Kept telling me "Keep Eyes On Road" when I actually was. No sunglasses either.

So WHILE Subaru's clearly making an attempt to be aggressively "safe," they simultaneously give you the most stupid, laggy infotainment screen that I've dealt with, that makes you go back to the home screen just to get back to other basic functions like changing A/C settings or playing with the radio. It's super distracting and not intuitive at all.

Perhaps I'm spoiled by Volvos and now my older (but newish to me) Mercedes, but fak me I did NOT like this gen Outback. At least not for the $40K+ this version goes for new. THAT'S what does not compute with me at all. For that much coin, I'll stick with used Volvos/Mercedes. Leagues better. Not even remotely in the same category.

it's clearly stolen... someday the mountain might get 'em, but the law never will.

Been fighting with a rear facing child seat I try back of my A4 allroad. I really love this car, but I’m starting to realize why families drift towards bigger vehicles. My wife is okay in the passenger seat with the seat behind her, but I wouldn’t ask a taller friend to sit up there. I put it in the middle to see what if that’s an improvement. Maybe time to shop for something bigger.
