Stop-and-go traffic on I-70 blows with a manual.

Have you considered purchasing a wagon quiver so you can still enjoy the pleasures of owning a manual when you escape front range traffic purgatory? Our Prius V returns 82 mpg on I70 in stop and go on the downhill. Two pedals of big city delight once back in the hood. My wife rallies that thing in the big cities while I run the short cut navigation on Google maps in the shotgun position. Shaved 3 minutes off our ETA last weekend in Milwaukee. Definitely got some nods of approval from the Ubers.

Wagon Stoke
Also posted in the Volvo thread. Considering selling my low mile 09 XC70 T6, located in Boulder. Thinking $14,500. Excellent condition.

Agree. At night in a blizzard if you can turn headlights off and fogs on, I think it's much easier to see the road and avoid star wars syndrome. If you need a change of pace, or to check markers or oncoming car you want to make sure they see, flip the regular beams on for a minute. They do catch rocks easier being lower, but that's the price we pay to live in first world problems.

Yeah, fro's right for sure.
Reading through the thread, it's obvious that most people don't actually understand car lighting.
Plus the US DOT mandates the shittiest light pattern, so there's way too much random light in the sky for fog and snow driving (both for you and oncoming as well). The Euros figured this shit out years ago, and their ECE pattern with its vertical cut-off and right side eyebrows is wayyy better.

The euros deal with a lot more fog than the US. They are an accessory to us and a necessity to them. They aren't any smarter just more motivated.

That's a very dubious claim.
But aside from that, I wasn't talking about accessory, or even OEM fog lights, I was taking about the overall projection pattern of lights spec'ed on NA cars being less focussed than the euro-spec. And that design spec has nothing to do with weather. US DOT spec lights are designed to illuminate overhead signs, and Euro E-Code aren't. The result is that there is more glare here which translates into fog and snow above your hood line reflecting light back at you, reducing your ability to see the road.

The stock headlights on my GTI and wife's Alltrack are terribly weak but the standard LED fogs help. I love both cars but should've sprung for the LED lighting package.
I find it odd that the US government now requires safety tech like back up camera but weak standard head lamps are okay.

Yeah ok cool. Where did you learn about headlight cutoffs plus beam patterns and the difference between dot and euro specs?

Car forums.
If you're interested in this stuff, have a look around Daniel Stern's tech pages.
Susquehanna has a good tech section as well http://www.rallylights.com/reference-center

Oh I thought you might have an actual education on the subject.
I've driven in Europe a whole lot. I don't like the harsh cut off. I use my brights there more than here. Fuck you deal with my glare. MURICA

We just need to be able to turn our fogs on and our headlights off. I have never had a car that could do that except my 86 Ford Escort and that is because I rewired it myself.
Not sure why. Commercial trucks can do it for sure. I operate a 2017 Freightliner Cascadia day cab and I can run fogs and turn off the incredible LED headlights.
Also midwest el Nino winters can be fogged in for weeks at a time. I doubt yurp has much on us.

It can be a pain depending on car and make, but you can get BMW's and I figure most other makes to be programmed that way.
Well maybe I'm the faggot America

My old man replaced the low beams in our VW with Euro spec bulbs and housing when I was younger. The light cut off at a clean horizontal line that bumped up toward the passenger side. Took some getting used to, but those things were awesome, especially for crap weather.
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.
