Saw a new BMW M5 wagon leaving the nearby dealer today. It's got a big booty. I'd still take an RS6Avant over it just on looks alone, but I'm excited to see and hear more. Any time we get more high HP wagons in the States that's a good thing. I'd post my pic I grabbed, but you know, TGR forums are broken and all that.

not that it matters since I cannot afford any of them, but the new BMW styling is not attractive at all.

now this on the other hand, schwing!

Always an interesting discussion to me. I’ve been warming to that big booty. And while it’s out of my practical price range I wouldn’t kick it out of my garage.

I don’t think they’ve gotten worse at making cars, and while I’d buy a classic as an occasional novelty and for the analog experience, that’s not what I’d choose to daily or to drive cross country.

Like straight skis or vintage explosivs. The modern shit is SO damn good and the thumbed noses always strike me as inauthentic or unaware or at least having a different conversation than I’m having.

There’s a whooooole category of people who won’t drive BMWs because they’re BMWs. I was one.
    I got over it.
2 of my friends have new or recent ones and they’re like: “You were right.”

Given the option between that BaT car or the new Mfive touring as a daily driver for the next three years, including road trips across country, it’s not much of a dilemma for me.

Granted. My first car was an underpowered 320i stick. Owned e24 m6 which was fun. Currently have e39 m5 which is cold dead hands to get rid of. Unless I found an e39 stick wagon.

What’s the best used option for my son? Doesn’t need stick although he likes it. All wheel drive for skiing. Affordable and reliable. lol. No Subaru.

The new Outback is no longer a wagon. And it's hideous.

From a brand standpoint it makes no sense. They already have the Forrester, which doesn't know what it wants to be to begin with (SUV or boxy wagon?). I get that car companies now have 12 SUVs in their lineups so this will probably sell no matter what, but the Outback held a strong grip on the wagon segment that already had only a handful of members.

Yeah, I hate the new Outback. When our 2013 gives up the ghost, I'll probably be shopping a Mazda crossover or SUV. That's assuming Mazda doesn't see an opening and bring back the 6 wagon to the US.

I assume Subaru did the research, but losing a big chunk of Outback fans in order to compete in the SUV market with every other automaker seems like a bad call to me.

^^^ And it’s ugly, but then I guess what everybody likes is these big boxy SUVs, so nobody wants to stand out and be even slightly different anymore.

WWMD? I guess I'm having my old man car crisis as I really want that Jaguar coupe I posted up a month ago. My wife has her 4 series, which she loves. I have the V70R and my Cayenne S. I really love both and the V70R is so much more practical, but I got to admit the grunt from the cayennes is pretty cool. The Volvo has 130,000 more miles on it but has been very reliable over its lifetime. I can't justify having three cars for me when I only drive maybe 15,000 miles a year. So am I crazy and just leave it as it is or let one of the current cars go?

Never in U.S. history has the public chosen leadership this malevolent. The moral clarity of their decision is crystalline, particularly knowing how Trump will regard his slim margin as a “mandate” to do his worst. We’ve learned something about America that we didn’t know, or perhaps didn’t believe, and it’ll forever color our individual judgments of who and what we are.

Yeah. I had e24 m6 years ago. And this inline six has way more power.

Can’t wait to drive it. As well as my son.

Plus it’s a wagon that was never made. Someone took the time effort and money to do a conversion.

I find the lack of wagon love in the general population very odd. My 06 is just to loved to part with when ever I try. Holds a 10' surfboard inside, all our camping shit and the puppies, does double duty as my pickup when I need to buy lumber or a water heater. It is just a great fuckin car and it still looks good with a rockin stereo and it hauls ass when needed to pass cars while driving up to Mammoth on the 395. Dumb to have two cars, but I just can't part with it yet.

Every SUV from a Corolla Cross to an Expedition is a station wagon.

Front engine, 4 doors, rear cargo area and a rear door. All glorified wagons. They're just called different things because of size is all

The wagon vibe got killed in gen pop in the 80s and 90s when all the Volvo driving professors that loved the smell of their own farts clogged up the highway with their 240s then proceeded to hold you up even longer when they preached to you about something at the grocery store.
Its not quite as bad as driving a golf cabrio but some images are just hard to let go of.

Those Volvo 240s got handed down to late GenX/early Millennial kids who went to schools like Bates, Connecticut College and William and Mary where they ferried scores of stoned lacrosse players and sailing team dropouts. In that effort though they gave birth to the next generation of wagon fans.

Once these 2nd gen wagon aficionados came of older age, bolstered by family money or at least a middling job in law or finance, they had a chance to get their own longroof.

Tastes were different, however, and the trans-Atlantic yearning for high HP wagons took hold. Unfortunately for all of us, the Euros decided that Americans want SUV-adjacent wagons and that fast wagons or even non-off-roady wagons were not worth selling on our shores anymore.

hence the need for not only this thread, but the clear, bold, distinct dividing line between a wagon and the lineup of SUVs from any manufacturer.
