With just over 100,000 miles on my Volvo 240 wagon I should be good on never having to buy another wagon again for the rest of my life.

Yours is that gorgeous maroon one, yeah?
If so, you're right, there will be 3 things still kicking after the giant meteor hits: cockroaches, Keith Richards, and your 240 wagon.I still call it The Jake.

Yes, it's the maroon one. I also have a Subaru wagon that will never die.

Wagon Stoke
The moonroof on our XC60 fucking sucks donkey ballz when there’s a rack up top. Rack plus cargo box and it’s hard to enjoy music. Have tried several different rack combos. Have tried adjusting the tightness of the glass. We got this rig so we could load it up and still haul ass. Turns out the noise gets bad at highway speed and only gets worse the harder we push.
Would buy a solid top in a heartbeat. Fuck that thing.

It was me. We had a 07 be 530xi wagon with sport package, and the n/a 6. It was a nice car. Looked and felt great. Drove very nicely for a wagon. But... And it's a big but. It was a maintenance and repair nightmare. I bought mine fully documented, and it had been in for several issues, but nothing major, and the game of whack a mole never stopped. Water pump, radiator expansion tank, pcv, oil pan (axle passes through the oil pan so front suspension and cross member needs to come apart and axle pulled to access) air compressor for suspension, tail lights (but aha! It's not the taillight, need to rebuild the lift gate wiring harness because it's too short) hydraulic auto liftgate strut (new one is $1000, we used a standard one instead) air bags, valve cover gasket, optical steering angle sensor, window sensor (window will only go up 2 inches at a time), and on and on... The big panoramic sunroof was awesome and never gave a lick of trouble, until a buyer was looking at the car, then it decided it didn't want to close. Eventually it closed, he low balled me. I took it and prayed he would make it out of the driveway with nothing else going wrong before he did. Good riddance.
Couple other common issues we didn't have are leaky mechatronics sleeve in transmission, leaks that cause water to accumulate in the spare time area where conveniently there are computer modules that subsequently fry.
We also had a 328xi that shared the same drivetrain as the 530, and was beginning to have several of the same issues.sigless.

We test drove an XC70, but went with the XC60. We were surprised by 2 things:
1. The XC70 felt cramped compared with our Subarus. So it felt like a downgrade in comfort.
2. The XC60 was way sportier. Tighter handling, snappier, just drove better.
I keep thinking about driving one again because they’re fucking sexy. But I’d need to figure out how to tighten up the handling.

Maybe try a V90 also? I was looking to buy one one late 2020 and thought to myself a 2018 would be in the $30k range by April 2021. Wrong and now the are getting closer to $45k. Used car prices are stoopid these days.

Hey jm2e, what year XC60 and what engine did you get? We just got a 13 T6 for my wife. I've been looking at older P2 XC70s and like the car but the 60 is much nicer to drive and does feel sportier for sure.

Yeah, super annoying. And you want to know how easy it is to take the liftgate apart on an e61? Major pain in the ass. Dealer charges $1300 to fix (or so i have read). No thanks.

Dang guys, we have owned a bunch of Bimmers over the years and have had good luck if sold before 120k miles. After that they can start to get expensive.

The ones I have now are e34 540i 190k or so, and e30 160k or so. They are better than the newer ones. Better built, more engaging to drive.

I've had a handful of BMWs and they only got more annoying the newer they got. My E34 and similar vintage cars were bulletproof and ran flawlessly with normal maintenance. Basinbeater is doing it right with an E34 and an E30 - those are both fun chassis that are reasonably easy to work on. E46 and newer were just full of weird problems that no car should have had. Damn if they didn't drive well.
When I've got the time to work on project cars more I'll buy another E34 540i/6 - favorite car I've ever owned.
