Bump...
I would be happy daily driving one of these I think... When I bought my 944 turbo, I was looking for the best 944T or e36 m3 I could find under $10k.

The next M3 to jump in price I hear. Never understood the bad rep they got. Sure they're not the prettiest, but then again we all like Cindy Crawford's mole, don't we?
I still call it The Jake.

I'm a fan of M3s, especially in blue. E36, E39 or a similar year 5 series with a v8 would all keep my addiction at bay as a daily. They can come with clean looking wheels as well, kind of rare for an OEM setup.
How rough is the maintenance/rebuild cycle on the M3s up to e39s?

I think the US market e36 m3 is not too crazy maintenance wise. Finding a decent one that has not been abused and neglected is the issue.

E39 v8 540i or m5 is a whole nother story. On the 540i, timing chain is a disaster and pricy. For m5 multiply by 5.Last edited by basinbeater; 02-25-2017 at 08:11 AM.

Always loved the E36 M3 as it was the hot car when I started to make enough money to buy a good car (used of course, and not just the well-used remnants of a car).
I had the original '02 Bugeye version of the WRX that I got rid of when my teenagers started to drive. That was a fun car to drive, but now I have this STI and it's so much better - This is the most capable car I have ever driven and certainly owned. As configured I have it making ~420hp and some of the time I can contain my enthusiasm while driving ...

I had an E30 and E36 M3(4 dr--IMO this car looked better as a 4 dr than 2dr). As one would expect, night and day difference between E30 and E36. I thought the E36 was way more fun on public roads than the E30 and vice versa on the track. US E36 got a bad rap because the motor was not the higher revving individual throttle bodied version the Euro E36 got. I knew someone who transplanted a Euro motor into his E36 and in a drag race my US version would beat it to ~60mph. The US motor had more low end than the Euro motor and it was a quick car in its day.
Maintwise -it wasn't an expensive car to work on because it shared a lot of bits with other E36's. The stuff that was different (engine, gearbox, etc) was robust, but the ZF steering racks were leakprone--it was a $700+ replacement. I replaced mine twice, and knew of other owners that had the same issue. The 5 spd gearbox shifted great--it was one of the things I enjoyed most with that car. Not Miata-short throws but it had a very nice feel. The ride was tuned more to the street, but was a nice balance of sporty and luxury. For the track, the E36 suspension needed to be tweaked in the rear because the car pushed too much in the corners. I really noticed coming from the E30 which was very balanced.
Hope that helps if you're considering one."timberridge is terminally vapid" -- a fortune cookie in Yueyang

I vaguely remember the owner of a yellow, four door E36 M3 being surprised the rear subframe hadn't come through the unibody in his accumulated track time. Didn't seem to keep him from passing most of the field.

No, just a car/driver that was regularly at the same events.

Here's mine. Koni singles, H&R sport springs, 245s on all corners, and alignment for autocross. ~80k mi. So far, I've replaced motor and trans mounts, aux fan, welded a cracked header, replaced a shock tower, and replaced one of those explosive seatbelt pretensioners. It's been pretty easy to maintain for what I do to it.
A good alignment and tires will make a huge difference in how it drives. I started on staggered Dunlop star specs, then staggered z2s, then square BFG Rivals, currently Bridgestone RE-71Rs. It was more fun to drive before the RE-71Rs once I got the alignment figured out, but it's way faster on the stickier stuff. Once you go to a square setup with a bit of camber in the front and remove all toe from the rear, it's pretty neutral, and you can rotate tires.

They're great looking cars. Those Kosei K1s used to be the go-to autocross wheel.

Nice. Mine was arctic silver.
Re: the tires. I believe the LTW version did that--same tire front and back on 1" wider rear rim.
I still recall the dealer where I bought my M3 trying to get rid of a Liteweight for 10K under sticker and no takers at the time. Saw on Bring a Trailer and one of the auctions they sell for ~140K now. Wtf?"timberridge is terminally vapid" -- a fortune cookie in Yueyang
