IMO consumer reports is not what it used to be. in some areas (especially food) they have gone away from science to more a agenda/fear based approach.

My 03 legacy non turbo with 126k miles doesn't lose that much and it leaks oil. You should get that looked at.
Mine leaks through the cam seals which are apparently a thing. There was also some trouble with the drain plug. A rock hit it a long time ago. Damn low ass oil pan. I'll need a new one some point in the not too distant future.
By the time it needs to be topped off, it's time for a 3-5k oil change anyway.
Check your head gasket, zOMGz!

I had a few BMW's and none burned a drop of oil. Mechanical nightmares but no burnt oil.

My 09 A4 was burning oil but passed the initial consumption test. About 18 months later was drinking a quart in 500 miles. Brought it in for another test, easy fail. Dealership replaced the pistons and rings, engine's tighter than a dolphin's bunghole now.
No doubt there are some QC issues, but damned if I don't love how that car drives.
