Thanks all. Great thoughts and perspective even if I can't act on it. I really appreciate it.
My dog was at the vet all day getting tests and they charged me a bunch of money and told me he is anemic but not sure why. Because of our sorta sick dog (we were emailed by a friend at the shelter Saturday about the new herder coming in and our pup took a turn down Sunday) and our immediate plans for a road trip I think adopting the high energy pup right now isn't in the works. We emailed them back and said if he isn't gone to a good home by the time things are settled with us we'd be interesting in fostering for sure if needed and perhaps adopting him.

Well the herder we were looking at, Truman went to a good home just like we thought he would. Arrived home early this morning after pulling the plug early on what ended up being a cabin getaway in JH for obvious reasons/social responsibility/plains blizzard/good to be at home during a shitstorm. Opened the rescue centers page this morning and found Buster whom they claim is a 1 year old Border mix- seems more cattle dog to me but his demeanor seems Border. Made an appointment and they agreed to let us see him outside on COVID19 friendly terms even though the shelter is now closed to the public. I loved him. Super intense attention to me - like Border collie intense and a ball fetching machine who doesn't seem like he is going to run away. He will come home tomorrow as Casper, after they clean him up - he will be pals with our dog Bridger who seems to be hanging in there with iron supplements working to get his hemoglobin up. Hoping some of Bridger rubs off on Casper. Everything about Truman that kind of worried me does not exist with this dog. I am sure he comes with his own set of issues though and slightly bigger than what we are used to. Stoked.
Also, the lame JH names are cool here because nobody else has dogs with lame JH names. Just like our girl is the only Sage in Eastern Iowa.
Thanks for the kick in the ass everyone who chimed in. Made it easy to pull the trigger today.Last edited by uglymoney; 03-19-2020 at 03:59 PM.

maybe its a regional thing, but stop buying fancy dogs and hit the pound
That's a great age to adopt a herding dog. Grown up enough to not be a (complete 12 out of 10) shitshow but young enough to be trainable and develop a great bond with the family.
Oskar was 3 when we adopted him and he is one stubborn SOB.
I may be rolling through your 'hood again this fall, we could have one heck of a dog party if so!
Edit: dug through the archives and found this one of Oskar playing with uglymoney's furkid Bridger. I think he'll keep up with Casper just fine!

Your dogs are are so awesome dude. Hanging with you this summer is what really got the ball rolling on this whole adoption thing. Definitely ping if you stop back through.

I would only get rescue animals. And I don’t like to get kittens/puppies either. I’d rather adopt adult animals.

I don’t saunter through the the forums as much as I used to but I’m amazed never stumbled on this thread - 12 years into the best dog ownership relationship we ever could have imagined with a slightly neurotic border collie/Aussie/lab - who the hell knows what else...she was so not perfect and so the perfect dog for our family... will love her forever
