Thread: DPS Lotus 124 - These Look Fun

Not gonna have too much to offer here to satisfy the curious - but I have the first generation Powderworks Lotus 120s. They are just slightly lighter than regular ones for a premium price. Like paying 30% more to have nicer wheels on your sports car.
My friend has the 124s - I'll ask him what he thinks of them - I'll be skiing with him for 3-4 days of touring at a hut in mid-March so may get a chance to ski them for a bit.
But don't hold your breath for much as I don't have the experience to offer the detailed analysis/description most of you come up with when describing a ski.Last edited by bennymac; 02-14-2016 at 07:46 PM.

C'mon guys, nobody has been on the retail version of the Lotus 124 yet (non Powderworks)?
I'm really intrigued about L124 as a potential alternative to my Spurs for deep days. The 191 cm length would suit me perfectly as well. Fine for me if this should be a wider platform blend of RPC and L120.

I had my hands on the pure version, but with not much in the forecast I declined to ski those in lieu of a few other gems.....

I still can't believe no one has added a camber profile pic or a detailed review of this ski.
While I have not skied them myself, I have skied with a buddy who has a pair in addition to a pair of L120s and he loves them. He skied the 124s all year and gave 120s to his kid. Compared to the L120 (which is actually a 122!) the L124 has less tip rocker, is 9 mm wider at the tip and has 12m more side cut. Binding mounts are further forward and closer to center than the L120. Basically the skis look nothing alike. The L124s tip shape and rocker profile is less "5 point" or paddle tech as DPS likes to call it, and more like a fat shape ski. It's a completely new look for a Lotus ski, and looks a lot more like a wide version of the old Wailer 105 (bamboo sidewalls) or the new Wailer 106, with maybe 300mm of tip rocker. But even that tip rocker has a very different profile than any Lotus or Wailer - it's hard to describe, but at first glance you'd think there was no rocker. Then when you place them base to base you realize how much rocker there is...
FWIW, I've heard through the grapevine that the L120 is going to be discontinued, which is a bummer - I freaking love that ski! So if you need another pair, or are curious, you might want to commit now before they are gone!

I know a very good skier - not a good skiing dentist - but a genuinely serious full time skier who is extremely picky about his skis... and he spoke highly of the 124. It surprised me, because very little passes his standards.

DPS Lotus 124 - These Look Fun
I saw them at alta. Lotus 120 with visibly more sidecut and some width to make it easier for the dentists to plunder. Big long tip rocker but shaped a lot like nose on the 112.
Guy on lift said he loved it. Of course there was 2-3 feet of fresh so aLot of things would look really, really good.Last edited by whyturn; 06-27-2016 at 10:29 PM.
I need to go to Utah.
Utah?
Yeah, Utah. It's wedged in between Wyoming and Nevada. You've seen pictures of it, right?
So after 15 years we finally made it to Utah.....

The tail screams L120, the tip Wailer. If they weren't $1300 I'd love to give them a shot.

No profile for the L124? I'd love to see it. I'm a big fan of the original L120 profile before the tip rocker was amped up. If the L124 is a similar profile to the old L120s, I'm interested.
But no profile posted anywhere I can find; not on dpsskis nor elsewhere.Merde De Glace On the Freak When Ski

^^^buster
The ones I saw at alta had abrupt sharp rocker like the 112. Very angled and over a foot long. But yes they need rocker pics on website or adsI need to go to Utah.
Utah?

rocker pics!? They haven't even printed rocker specs on the 124 anywhere that the buyer can read
IME Lotus 120 had 600mm of tip which never subbed, the 112 had 450mm of tip which could sub out,
It looks like "Lotus" now means big mountain/powder near as I can tell?Lee Lau - xxx-er is the laziest Asian canuck I know

I saw a pair in Escape Route Squamish, part of the Dreamtime promotion. From what they were saying, what was on the DPS site and from looking at them, they appear to be an effort to make a 120ish Lotus that has better variable and resort performance. I like the 120's in the BC, but always hated their resort performance or lack there of which stands to reason because they are a no compromise powder ski that weren't meant to perform in resort conditions. So it looks like this is their answer to having a big ski that can handle groomers and mixed snow conditions making them more accessible while still being powder centric. They are really more of a bigger waisted Wailer with no camber and a flatter tail more like the Lotus. They could be interesting.

Just got some Lotus 124 P3 yesterday. Naturally I haven't skied them yet, but this ski seems to mean business. It's a pretty stout ski, far away from being a soft noodle ski. Going by some unscientifically handflexing, I think it's right up there with the RPC. I think the tip is very similar to the tip of my last generation Lotus 138. There is camber on it and a little tail rocker. Snapped a picture of the tips yesterday, for those who care about the tips and rocker profile.

Was just a MEC in Vancouver and saw the Pure 3 version of this ski in a 191 and 185. Strangely, the 191 has more of the traditional paddle tech tip like the 99 and 112, 120 with 145 dimension and the 185 has a wider 149 tip with a shape more akin to the Wailer 106. The 191 seemed to flex stiffer as well. I bought a pair of the Dream Time Tour 1 versions offered this summer. 3.2 kg @ 185 length for dedicated non resort powder touring. I was talking with DPS and the Tour 1's in this ski are not a regular production item this year for DPS, but may be in the future. Mine are serial number 001. They have a shape more similar to the paddle tech that the 191 Pure 3 version has rather than the more waileresque tip of the 185 Pure 3.

Skied the 120 a lot. Imo if they wanted to make the 120 more resort friendly they should have Kept the tip and tail ratio but widened them slightly and narrowed the waist slightly. Just a touch to get the radius under 30m. Keep the pin tail and rocker/flex of the ski.
Seems strange they have made the waist wider to make the ski more resort friendly-but what do I know.
