I saw you were back over here again visiting them. Vibes. That is a tough business to be in.

Corn is about even with last year, soybeans in the shitter, land prices at historical highs, farm debt is up, bankruptcies here are double over last year. Inputs prices up. Add the unpredictable weather factor in and it is a lot of risk. For the few farmers trying to diversify away from the cash commodity crops they can't buy insurance and they have to develop their own markets so it is hard for them to scale and it remains a small but growing niche market - interestingly far more popular in Eastern Iowa than Western Iowa - cultural differences abound. For farmers trying to plant winter cover crops for soil and water quality and additional possible income (we are up from 2% of acres to a still pathetic maybe 4% in the last few years) they can't plant cover crops if they can't harvest in time because of late planting and wet weather in the fall...which is not the traditional norm here...falls were dryer, springs were wetter, and the weather came from the West, not the North or the South, back and forth ala jetstream amplification.

I'm a city boy though! We do have a little land in our family but it is timber reserve so we shoot deer and harvest trees occasionally. My information is definitely second hand when it comes to climate changes effects on farmers and most of them would probably give a different perspective depending on who you talk to. And most farmers are still not on board with human caused climate change.

Here is a report detailing some of the Koch Oligarchs anti climate lobbying in action. Pushing the narrative we all have to live with. You can look at the money they spread around and literally track it back to the nonsensical positions espoused here.

This is cool. Model simulates earth with no CO2 in the atmosphere.

It's interesting how rapid warming in the Arctic influences mid-latitude circulation because of a weakened jet stream. From jamal's link:

"The northern polar jet stream (it has a counterpart in the Southern Hemisphere) is driven partly by the temperature contrast between masses of icy air over the North Pole and warmer air near the equator. Climate change, true to the predictions of the past half century, has led to faster warming in the Arctic than in the temperate zones. So the temperature difference between the two regions has been lessening.

Research suggests that this reduction in the temperature difference is robbing the jet stream of some of its strength, making it wobblier and contributing to more temperature extremes."

The bummer is climate change contributes to Mid-to-East Canada/U.S. cold snaps while the West becomes hotter and drier.

Anything Scougs posts is liable to assume the reader lacks critical reasoning.

Cold periods are correlated with civilization collapses?

    Apparently this is why

Social mood always turns negative with colder climate, and that brings about riots and wars
No way. I'm sure it has nothing to do with ancient civilizations having limited ability to combat food shortages due to weather.

Bernie said we only had 8 or 9 years left on climate; downing the number from 12. appears it's already too late:

from the former UN chair on climate in 2007: "“If there is no action before 2012, its too late."

might as well enjoy your suv, take a plane flight; have some hamburgers from methane producing cows; it's too late now. enjoy it until the icecaps melt and flood your town or city.

A look at factors driving Chicago violence as the city sees dramatic increases in the number of shooting victims and homicides. (Jemal R. Brinson / Chicago Tribune)

The seasonal cycle of Chicago crime peaks during summer months, but not all types of crime are equally susceptible to changes in temperature.
The Tribune looked at Chicago police crime data from January 2012 to June 2017, some 1.5 million incidents, from homicides and shootings to drug offenses and theft. Correlating those day-by-day crime records with changes in average daily temperature shows some types of crime are much more likely to increase when the weather is hotter and decrease when cooler. To show this, the Tribune built a statistical model to quantify the effect of temperature on different types of crime. The model controls for the differences in average daily temperature, as well as the frequency of different types of crimes, over the years. Once these variations are accounted for, the model then tries to predict the number of crime incidents, per crime type, for every 10 degrees increase in temperature.
Battery, which includes shootings, is among the crimes that increase most as temperature rises, as do theft and criminal damage. However, homicide does not show a relationship to temperature, nor do drug crimes.
Here are major crime categories, from the City of Chicago Data Portal as they relate to changes in temperature, from the Midwest Regional Climate Center.

    Why zero homicides?
Why zero? This zero doesn't mean there are no homicides, it means that homicides don't predictably increase with rises in temperature. Although homicides rise during the summer months and have spiked dramatically in 2016 and 2017 the relationship between homicide and temperature is not linear. If one rises, the other doesn't necessarily rise with it. Battery, for example, which includes shootings, rises in a consistent and dramatic fashion when temperature increases. Spikes in homicide over the last five years are inconsistent and rise and fall irrespective of changes in temperature.
