Powerful movie. Ethan Hawke is great great actor. You hate him at the beginning and like him at the end.

I don't know about that. My opinion: I think the movie would've been a lot better if not every single adult male character was an asshole.

Just made it too easy. It would've been much more interesting if some of the decisions the family made were difficult because people aren't complete assholes or complete good guys. It's usually one little tipping point about someone's character and that's hard to write.

A agree with that. The scope of the film created some holes that were hard to fill. When it was good though, it was very good. So few movies today have a real story.

I also think the development of Hawke's character was purposeful in starting him out as an ass and softening him as the story progresses. It might also say something about the woman's consistent choice in men.
