My 01 needed a new trans @120K, as did a lot of Volvos of that vintage, a problem they fixed on later models(and did not plague the pre-2000 ones). Of course it's got ~185K on it now... and is in the shop because the engine fan had an electrical malfunction and wouldn't turn off, completely draining the battery. The battery was only 3yrs old and under a pro-rated warranty so Volvo picked up 1/2 the cost, but with the engine fan replacement it'll still be $700+ this afternoon.
Move upside and let the man go through...

Late to this thread but I have the xc70 t6. Fine rig. Great in snow, great kid hauler and lots of room. Got nickeled and dimed on small stuff but generally very reliable. Kind of tank like handling wise.

The 98 will probably start burning oil soon at that mileage. The valve seals go bad on those around 150k as well as the turbo. . Unless the work includes having the head rebuilt as well as the turbo.

I had the '78 240 DL. Seats were perfect for fingerbangining ol' Mary-Jane Rottencrotch through her pretty pink panties. Good times had by... well... me anyway. Would recommend.

Only euro wagon I know quite well are various renditions of the MB stationwagon, but I've always really loved the design of the Volvo XC 70, 80 and 90. They seem to be oddly timeless...like any good and true design is.
And that one is a 2001 and it STILL looks up to date. Actually I like it BETTER than the 2015!!!"The reason death sticks so closely to life isn't biological necessity - it's envy. Life is so beautiful that death has fallen in love with it; a jealous, possesive love that grabs at what it can." by Yann Martel from Life of Pi

Whats your actual experience? Lots of people sell used turbos with that mileage, allowing time to cool down after a drive(ie turbo timer) will greatly extend the useable mileage to 300k, and you will end up with external oil leaks well before valve seals assuming the pcv system was completely re-done. I vote for the R

My R was nickel and diming me at 140K miles. He's done a lot of maint so you might be safe, but your next couple years could look like that list above...

I think I'm gonna pass for that reason and this will be the car my kids use most often so a bit newer with more airbags is what the wife wants. It's here http://forums.swedespeed.com/showthr...for-a-new-home

3 hours away is just enough to be a hassle because I work on Saturday and he works on my weekday off. I've been on that forum for a while, I had a C30 a while back that got tboned. I tend to use the same name on most forums.
Bmills- Heh yeah that certainly crossed my mind I need to take me out of the line of thinking though and find a newer, safer, slower base fwd model in great shape for less.

So... update I guess. I got to completely hoon the new XC70T6 around on some back Low Country roads this evening on the way to a boil (read: really sandy and pea gravel). Got it to kick out sideways a bit but that awd and the new beefy tires got it back in line really quick. This thing is the most fun I've ever had in a wagon and that engine is a lot of fun!
Wife wasn't impressed with my rallye skills though with her new whip.
EDIT: Oh, and I'm still blown away by how much more cargo space I have as compared to the X5. Can't wait to take this thing on a weekend ski trip somewhere to see how it goes in the snow loaded down with all our gear.I still call it The Jake.

Honestly, this thread got me psyched to buy an older Volvo to leave at the Mass. place, there's an awesome guy literally 2 miles up the road, his shop only works on Volvos, I mean they don't take other work, but his reputation is amazing, he's like a Volvo whisperer. I talked my self into it, but then I remembered I'm a man.
Kidding, good cars, if I find the right one I may buy it.

Haha. Don't get me wrong, lots of my man parts miss the BM family hauler but this Volvo has me stoked. It's fast, it's awd, tons of space and it looks good. It takes me back for sure to that first inherited Volvo... but way better. I'd go out and take a crappy cell pic of the amount of salt, mud and sand I put on the thing tonight but I'm a little too drunk, and lazy. And I think my wife is still a bit upset about how I treated her new hauler.
Massachusetts is littered with good Volvos. Shouldn't be a problem.I still call it The Jake.

I tell people that and they laugh at me for being a Volvo wagon fanboy. I have the Thule rack system for the R. Popped our luggage up top, so the big dogs had lots of room in the back for the 6 hour drive up to Mammoth. Everyone is happy and I still averaged 25mpg. Suck on that SUVs.

We are the Marcoses of sn00ty euro wagons with a 99 A4 2.8 Avant (195k), an 03 Allroad (145k), an 06 V70R(85k) and an 06 S4 Avant (90k). All manuals. Only the A4 bought new.
The 99 is my daily driver but I take the s4 a couple times a week and the s4 is the main ski car. Both of them are sweet on the road, really like the balance and feel. And the S4 honks, especially when accelerating from 60.
The Allroad is the wife's daily driver and it's got some body roll, so it's not as smooth as the other Audis on the curves, but it's been a solid boat. Aside from a trans issue and the pneumatic suspension each requiring some $ love.
The V70R drives like a tank and has like a 50+ foot turning radius which makes parking it a total pain. I don't like the suspension at all or the way it corners, especially compared to the A4/S4. But yes, the V70R r00lz in the cargo capacity department and has the least mileage of all of them and drives OK on the highway, going straight. So the V70R is still a good road car for the longer hauls wandering around the west getting the best mpg of them all and it does have some kick to it in the acceleration dept.Merde De Glace On the Freak When Ski

This is the answer for that: http://www.hotchkis.net/product/audi...3&md=993&sm=20
I've had mine for over 10 years, great product. If you're gonna keep the car I'd say it's worth it.
....the pneumatic suspension...requiring some $ love.

The turning radius is bad news and sadly you just have to adapt your driving style to deal with it. The other stuff though is easy to fix. When did you last do a suspension refresh? Shocks, front end suspension and all the bushings in the car? Buy the IPD track anti sway bars if you want the car to be solid through the turns. And lastly a stage II tune will have you calling your car "Highway Star". With the proper love, it is a tough wagon to beat unless a RS6 Avant is in your stable.

The turn radius is a bummer, especially given that you could spin those 240s like a top.
