I went back to your OP; that is an unusual amount of getting up...

I find I get up to pee at night now, where I never used to. Alcohol does increase the likelihood for me too.

I do hope you find a solution

Thanks, but it looks increasingly likely I won't. I went into this latest effort expecting that it would probably be futile, it's the runaround I got with the doctors that really bugs me.

Since you seem to have exhausted the possibility of physical ailments, maybe try hypnosis? Somehow you need to convince your body that it needs to void more of these liquids during the day, rather than at night, right? Maybe the route to doing that is through the brain.

Crazy idea, I know. But having actually witnessed somebody hypnotized, I've never been able to forget how powerful it seemed. Only throwing this out there because you seem to be giving up, so I figured what the hell. Looks like somebody did a study about the effect on overactive bladders. They do mention nocturia as one of the problems addressed through a combination of hypnotherapy and behavioral therapy.

Are you getting your PSA level tested on a regular basis? If not, I strongly advise you do.

I'm not opposed to trying this (though my issue is distinct from OAB that was tested in that study) but I have no idea where I'd even find a provider.

    It's not a prostate issue.

I had an ultrasound done of my kidneys, bladder and prostate, prostate was normal. Also, none of my symptoms are consistent with urethral constriction due to prostate enlargement. Prostate issues create a high frequency/low volume pattern that I don't have.

this suggestion is made mostly in jest - but you should sign up to be a living kidney donor.

they'll do the goddamn most thorough medical screening known to man (much of which you've already done), and if you get approved, well, you can't piss that much if you only have one of your two pissers. right?? it's gotta work that way.

It's not actually new. They took a drug that's been around forever (desmopressin, which is a synthetic version of the hormone arginine vasopressin) and created an intranasal formulation, presumably so that they can sell a cheap generic drug at name-brand on-patent pricing. I've tried the oral version to no effect. I asked my PCP and the internist about the nasal version and both said there's no point in trying the spray if the oral version was ineffective.

Sleep apnea does seem unlikely given your overall fitness and lack of snoring, but it is still possible without those two symptoms/factors. Nocturia can be an even stronger indicator of apnea than snoring in some people. Has you wife ever mentioned you breathing irregularly at night or anything? Might be worth a visit to a sleep specialist if you've taken it this far.

ha, don't take that advice, it's total horseshit.

i actually did give up one of my two kidders because of a post on reddit (was drunk in bed when i agreed to it and then i couldn't go back on my word), and now i gotta wake up all the time in the middle of the night to pee. so this is patently bad advice.

but i do now know what all those fancy numbers around GFR and creatine clearance and shit mean, so there's that.

True, the odds are Lloyd Christmas-low, but it is possible. The wife is a light sleeper and likely would have noticed and mentioned the usual apneic gasping. I don't wake up gasping, have dreams about drowning, etc. I've also experimented with mouth taping and have no problem making it the whole night with my mouth taped shut. Also, if my NP were due to sleep apnea interfering with the production of AVP by my hypothalamus, you would expect that my NP would respond to desmopressin, but it doesn't.

Given all that, I'm strongly disinclined to do an expensive inpatient sleep study. It looks like you can buy a bluetooth oximeter for under $50, so maybe I'll do that just to rule it out 100%.

    Nocturia

Quote Originally Posted by Dantheman View Post

Drank ~6 oz of water with dinner last night around 6:00 pm, my last fluid intake of the night. Previous fluid intake before that was ~8 oz of water at about 2:30. Peed in the shower around 7:30, full bladder. Emptied another full bladder right before bed at 9:30. Emptied another full bladder at 10:15, then another at 11:20, another at 1:30 am, another at 4:30, and another at 6:30. How in the fuck is that possible?

That's not necessarily typical, I usually make it until at least close to midnight before I first have to void and void 3-4x total, but multiple voids before midnight happens at least once every 10-14 days. On Xmas eve I somehow made it to 3:30 am. I have no idea when the last time was that I didn't wake up to void until that late, a true Xmas miracle.

Since my sleep gets interrupted so much I need at least 9.5-10 hours in bed each night to accumulate enough sleep to feel good. I made the mistake of doing some math the other day--compared to sleeping 8 hours per night that works out to an extra 23-30 24-hour days per year I spend in bed. Sobering.

I saw my PCP for a physical in early November. All bloodwork was excellent. Talked to him about this issue specifically again. Based on my lack of response to DDAVP he thinks my kidneys are just insensitive to ADH. He offered to refer me to a nephrologist, but also said:

    1. In general they're not that interested in treating polyuria.
    2. There's probably not anything they can do to help me anyway.
    3. If I did see one they'd probably want to MRI my kidneys ($$). Benign adrenal tumors are common, so there's a decent chance the MRI would show some kind growth on my adrenal gland(s). If the MRI shows something they'll probably want to biopsy it to be sure it's not malignant, thus necessitating a likely unnecessary surgical biopsy ($$$$+risks involved with abdominal surgery).

    I sympathise regarding Nocturia polyuria

I too pee pints every night even when I STOP ALL fluids during the day

    Example
    1. Absolutely no fluid intake from 10am to bed time 10pm

    2. Pee very little during day (Probably water from food, salads etc)
    3. Void prior to bed - 10pm
    4. 1st void 11.39 full bladder (300ml)
    5. 2nd void 1am full bladder (200ml)
    6. 3rd void 2am full bladder ((225ml)
    7. 4th void 3.19am full bladder (250ml)
    8. 5th void 5 am full bladder ((170ml)
    9. 6th void 6.20am (150ml)

On average - time of voids change but most nights always 5 times plus, worst case 9 times
Volume measure on average 3pints (worst 4pints of fluid)

Doctors are baffled, tried everything despopressin and others, seen urologists and taken every possible so called cure

The doctors (jack of all trades master of none) do not have a clue on how to help or really understand the condition,
Water deprecation test - normal (release if vasmopresdin normal / supposedly)
All docs think it’s in our heads and suggest mental health issue. Most are not understanding of Nocturia

I am very fit 50 years of age, work and play hard eat an incredibly healthy diet, do not drink or smoke.

Despite all the above the British Nhs doctors Refuse to brain scan of potruity gland in middle of brain or check kidneys

It’s a joke. There are as many people who suffer from this condition Nocturia (more than 2 urine voids a night) than cancer and no reasearch if this medical condition that will cost Nhs millions over next decade

It’s unbelievable. I really do not know where to turn next - my condition has been slowly progressing over last 7 years from 2 voids to worst case 9 voids (average 5 voids)

Where are you in the World?

Excess glucose in your blood is so damaging that your body starts excreting it through urine. IIRC, diabetes mellitus literally translates to "sweet urine." Doctors used to diagnose it by tasting patients' urine.

Threads here can rank surprisingly high in Google search results.

I tried using the oximeter over the weekend. I had issues with it staying on and connected to my phone and only got a couple hours of good data. The data I did get showed pretty stable SpO2 without any large dips that would indicate apneic episodes. I'll try it a few more times this week. Average HR was 47 bpm.

Why’s that ? I’m looking for answers and hoping that a solution to this problem of Nocturia can be found from those who suffer from it also? Sharing experiences and therapies can work for some and not others?
Did not expect childish comments like this one from people who don’t suffer with Nocturia.

Have you found a cure yet or a way of atleast reducing the urine volume/ void amounts So you can sleep uninterrupted?
