I have fairly severe nocturia for someone my age. Waking up 3x/night to piss is pretty standard. Seen four doctors and tried half a dozen drugs or so to no avail. I can usually fall back asleep, but it's still pretty disruptive. At this point it seems pretty likely it's going to be like this for the rest of my life.

Have the docs ruled out kidney problems for you? I got diagnosed with an autoimmune kidney disease a year or two ago and am currently on meds for it. I was asymptomatic except for a somewhat frequent urge to piss for my whole adult life until my primary care doctor got concerned about an anomolous high blood pressure reading at an annual checkup at age 34.
This sort of disorder is most frequently diagnosed in young men and they can't pin it down for sure without a full kidney biopsy. I'm glad they caught it pretty early for me.

Hah. I'd definitely rather get up to pee than sit in a wet diaper most of the night. I've seriously considered buying a length of ~1" vinyl tubing, running one end through the wall to the outside and attaching the other end to the bed. Then just roll over and relieve myself without ever getting out of bed. It would probably get really gross though.
The two urologists I've seen didn't bring that up as a possibility. Got a name for the condition? My bloodwork all looks great. I'd need a damn compelling reason to get a kidney biopsy right now. We've had some other medical issues in our house lately that are burning through funds. I try to avoid checking my HSA balance lately (#Merica!).

No diabetic tendencies?

Assuming that was directed at me, no. Last it was checked my fasting glucose, A1C and urinary glucose/protein were all stellar.
ETA: I exercise a lot, eat super healthy, good body comp, etc. There's no way in hell I have Type II diabeetus. Type I can strike just about anyone at any time in life, but I've been dealing with this for over a decade so it seems pretty unlikely.Last edited by Dantheman; 04-17-2019 at 01:34 PM.

I'm interested in this...I'm having some pretty major inner ear issues (no vertigo at this point) but it's very disruptive.
Now that I read this, one ENT i saw recommended Flonase even though I don't have any obvious allergy symptoms. I get some ringing after a bout of inflammation or fluid build up every couple days...i only have bad ringing when that fluid/inflammation goes away and it only lasts maybe a night with the ringing.
Wondering if the Reactine and flonase will help with my stuff. Must try.you sketchy character, you

Both times it started after a sinus infection and didn't go away with antibiotics. Mine came with pretty severe low tone hearing loss in my left ear and any bass tones in my right ear felt like they were bouncing around inside my head. When I spoke it felt like I was underwater. ENT said there were no structural concerns and ordered a follow up hearing test a few months later. If I used my left ear on the phone it sounded like high pitched squeaking, it was brutal. I thought I was going def.

The one I have is called IGA Nephropathy. I didn't get it caught and officially diagnosed until my doc noticed my BP creeping up, I got put on blood pressure meds, and got sent to a nephrologist. I had a urologist who whiffed on it, and my BP stayed below eyebrow-raising levels for a long time because I spent so much time active. I guess I'm not too far along, so I'm fine right now other than needing to piss more than I'd prefer and being mindful of hydrating. Long term prognosis is a mixed bag, but it's better that they caught it early. My blood work looks fine, but the protein in my piss test will raise a red flag for a doc who is looking for kidney disease. That's the test that got me sent in for a biopsy.
I feel your pain on the HSA. Hope your household has some good health coming to it.

Thanks. Definitely no BP issues to speak of and no signs of protein in urine, both of which were tested quite recently for unrelated reasons.

Get a condom catheter--commonly used in nursing homes and hospitals instead of a catheter that goes into the bladder. Or just get a urinal. I was using one briefly after I broke my back--it is important to position it so that the piss doesn't run back out and to make sure you're finished before you use it. Consider a waterproof sheet to protect your mattress.

I just realized that I posted early in this thread (2015) about my insomnia. Update - it basically went completely away once I started meditating every day for 15 minutes. I use the Headspace app - they have a sleep pack, but any of them seem to work. I think I've trained myself to calm my nervous system so it's not revving in the red zone constantly, and as a result I'm able to get to sleep.
No idea if this will work for everyone, but you might try it. The key is to really commit to the meditation every day; doesn't have to be for long, but you have to really try to get into it and work on calming your mind. That was the key for me. Like I said, I really like the Headspace app, but there are many others out there - find one you like.Outlive the bastards - Ed Abbey

You don't want to put the whole thing in there, that's just unsanitary.
Got to get up to use the bottle and you have to empty it every morning. Might as well just take 5 steps to the toilet at that point. I do break normal man rules and do the night drains sitting down with my eyes closed. For camping though, pee bottle all the way.
Plausible hypothesis I've read: Breathing is one of the few autonomic processes you can exert conscious control over. Once developed that control has a global effect on many other parts of your mind and body.
