A magical place in northern Alberta, where the beer flows like wine, and a high school dropout can make 200 grand a year, "working" in the tar sands.

Where stupid men instinctively flock, like the salmon of Capistrano. There are relatively few women, so the men buy hudge jacked up trucks with rubber testicles hanging off the hitch and a stack so it looks like a big rig, and then "roll coal" at every stop.

Classic small penis syndrome.

The women have their pick of these "men", and change men more often than they change tampons, as the other "men" purchase ever larger trucks and newer toys to impress the women so they can get their turn. The women tend to be completely materialistic, and don't really function well outside the Fort Mac bubble. Ulgy women also flock there instinctively like meth heads to Capilano, to land a rich guy.

The "men" tend to develop serious drug addictions, and after 5 or 6 years of making $200,000 a year with a junior high diploma, they return to society elsewhere, with a banged up truck, 500 grand of debt, and nothing but a drug habbit and a bunch of STD's to show for their efforts.


I've seen this happen to so many friends (male and female), it would be comical if it wasn't destroying peoples lives and the habitability of the planet itself.

I used to consider heading up there to try my hand in the trades. Some of the people I hung out with at parties 10 years ago were making a lot of money doing that. I never really had a problem with it until recently, and even then it was just the rapid growth aspect I didnt like. But I guess back then I was willing to settle for less if I got to stay down south, at least sort of close to home. 100gs a year for an 18 year old is just crazy anyway - I would have spent it all at that age. One of my roommies probably cleared 100gs first year out of school and might have been making close 500gs lately if he picked up the business side like he was gonna do. I got into my work too but have avoided the business/networking aspects and never cleared close to what those guys were making; I might have missed out a little.. The writing was on the wall post 2008 though. If you weren't saving for the last 7 years you're probably screwed now. The boom/bust cycle was bound to come back and bite us sooner or later. I'm thinking now thank god all those pipes they wanted didnt go in. Some were even talking nucular to power some plant up north at the height of it. Total insanity. Even now with full 2020 hindsight Im still not entirely sure what fucking hit us. Gold rush bullshit is all I can say.
