Killing me. I would find the money if those were 46-48s.

I don't know man, taking 6" off the top of those would result in something kind of odd.

Found a pair of almost new, 48" z-bends early this year on craigslist for $30. The seller was hesitant, but willing to ship, so I sent an additional $15 for their trouble. So... $45 value to me, plus shipping.

Years ago I removed the entire smith basket/tip assembly.
1) Get a pair of beater/donor sacrificial rental poles.
2) Using heat and some vice grips try to work the pole tip free from the aluminum shaft of the rental pole. If heat and vice grips don't cut it, use a dremel cutting attachment to cut the aluminum around the tip and peel it back with your vice grips. Set those tips aside.
3) Get a pair of scott baskets...with the stays. With scotts you have access to nearly any type of basket you would want.
4) Tap the tips into the smith aluminum shaft with a little JB weld.
5) Tap the Scotts into place with a light coating of JB weld on the inside of the stays.
Bingo. You now have normal baskets.
I used to have a photo TR of this but all the photos were hosted on biglines and the links are dead....but trust me, you can do this and it's not hard. I did this job in 2006ish and I'm still skiing those poles and baskets as of Thursday.
