God damnit. My wife drove off with the block heater cord still attached. Despite asking me if it was plugged in just as she stepped out the door.

This is the second time, the first she never realized and managed to lose the proprietary VW cord and slightly fuck up the recepticle in the bumper. It was hanging on by a thread, hope it isn't fucked. Otherwise it's gonna be close to a grand to fix.

I guess it's time to use the "CAR IS PLUGGED IN" sign again.

I've also been worried that she would put gas in the diesel, but that hasn't happened yet. Probably due to the practice of just letting it get empty until I fill it up, despite driving past 2 diesel stations on the way to work.

Extension cord that is long enough to loop through the car door handle? So that there's at least an oh, what's this moment?

Yeah, I had done the longer extension cord over the mirror trick last year, but my neighbour ran over it with a snow blower. I guess that is the better (and less condescending) way to go.

That breakaway won't work, I'd need it to disconnect from the car. As it is, the heater cord unplugged from the timer no problem. Eventually the cord gets run over by the tires and just wrecks shit in the process. Fortunately I saw it as she was backing up and that hadn't happened yet.

I'd like to say these short glowing cords would be enough of a reminder to keep that from happening, they are not.

She needs some space to cool down and gave you heads up, she didn't say you did anything wrong - win-win. Nothing to complain about IMO.

You would think plug-in vehicles would have a bright can't-miss-it notification on the dash saying the car is still plugged in... I don't have one so don't know, but that seems like a no-brainer.

Not a plug in car. Just a TDI with a block heater.

Stop plugging her car in. Problem solved.

PS. Unless it’s below zero I never felt the need to plug in a diesel.

Worst case, fire up the glowplugs twice. (Or more) Then hit the starter.

Well, it was -20C (-4 F) last night. It makes a massive difference on how quickly it starts to make heat.

But yeah, it would still start just fine without being plugged in. But then I'd have to hear about how cold the car is. Starting to get the sense that I just can't win.

Always fun when the day starts with a fight and then some lingering tension in the air, eh?
