    MPC #133: Roadscapes 1/30-2/15

    MPC #133: Roadscapes 1/30-2/15

Self explanatory. We all drive on them everyday yet they can change dramatically with light, weather, obstacles, geography, etc. Many times I find myself pulling off the road and just observing and shooting something that strikes me where in the past I was always in too much of a hurry reaching the destination.

    RULES:
    1. Photos must be taken within the time period of the contest.
    2. You may submit 3 photos during the competition.
    3. The contest moderator will choose 5 photos to be voted on.
    4. The winner will get a happy feeling in his/her pants. (That is a rule by the way, not an option.)
    5. In the event of a tie, the contest moderator will have the deciding vote.
    6. Winner will be the contest starter/moderator for the next comp.
    7. The winner has 3 days to start a new contest or 2nd place becomes the new winner.

    Lemme get this started...

Changing out the B+W barn pic with this one. I like the way this one flows better.

Aim for the chopping block. If you aim for the wood, you will have nothing. Aim past the wood, aim through the wood.

So the topic is old barns as seen from the road? Here is mine.

Ideally with a road as part of the composition and any subject matter that strikes you. Nice shot!

Are there no powerlines in NZ? I've been having a hard time finding good landscapes with roads that aren't crisscrossed by powerlines around here. Vermont may have banned billboards but powerlines screw up more photos.

Those shots were all out in (relatively) remote places, so no powerlines (next to the roads at least). In the more populated areas (again, relatively speaking -- this is NZ after all!), they are definitely around (like this). If they go along the road, they can form nice leading lines. If they go across the road, then yes, they can be quite distracting.

No worries. I've had a few local roadscapes in mind for a while, so this will force me to get out.

Winding Road to the Sky by Tim_NEK, on Flickr

Since there are so many trees here the power companies try to reduce the amount of line trimming they have to do by weaving the power lines back and forth across the roads. Kind of looks messy but it really helps with electrical reliability. In the case above, the power line is out in the field to the right off camera.

Climbing an old logging road, on the way to a great downhill trail. In the background is the east rim of Linville Gorge including Table Rock, Hawksbill, and Sitting Bear

More from the drive back from the river Saturday, always headed east when I go home so many days there is a great sunset in the rearview mirror....rarely do I ever stop to enjoy it.

    3 pic panno..

Oso slide.... the stretch of the Stilly directly under the slide was called Leon's.. swung a fly thru it more times than I can count... caught my first sizable steelhead there in '93.. a 36" wild hen that tore me a new one.. It was always a little disconcerting wading that stretch with the water continuously trickling out of the clay bank cliff above you... It slid in '06.. drastically changing the channel.. but stopping just short of the residences..

The scarp is 650' tall and nearly 1500' long.. right click for a larger image

    RIP to the 43
