    Crowdsourcing Ventilation Ideas

So this had been giving me a wild hair for months now. I work in the big room pictured below, and in the adjoining closet sit a massive bank of TGR servers puking heat all day. There's a fan that pushes it to our room, so by about 2 pm the temperature has gone up ten degrees and I feel like I'm going to pass out. We can't close the closet door ever and have to keep the room at a super cold temp to keep the servers from overheating. Afternoons the problem flips and we're all sweating. Feels like a big waste of heat that could be sucked down to the first floor or something and help heat the spaces down there, reduce the heating bill and energy use, etc. Have been trying to think of some imaginative, efficient, and ingenious way to make use of this heat and get it out of the server room w/o having to add another powered device like an AC unit. Anybody got any ideas?

Get a real data center or use a cloud host.

    This thread explains a lot.

Whoever is in charge of that and who came up with the just keep the door open solution..... shouldn't be.

No easy or cheap solution to server cooling. Self contained rack would be easiest:

These have an external vent but you would still have to dump heat 24 hours a day.

If your office is getting hot, what is the temp in your "data center"?

Based on your pics, I think I just need to break the window on the door to open the lock, run straight ahead to the server room (which is always open) and grab what I can in mayyybbbeeee a minute total. Might make a second trip for that framed Rice jersey though.

What do the other rooms look like? Maybe post a floor plan up?

You're in Jackson. Couldn't you pipe in some cold air from outside? Like this guy:

Boom. Cooling doesn't have to cost a fortune. Just innovate a bit. Maybe intake cold air in the winter. Exhaust warm air in the summer.

Banning HC didn't get rid of all the hot air?

Just take a baseball bat to the server. The swinging motion will help cool it down.

Or get a fan to/from the outside on a thermostat, that's what I've done with a similar situation at work.

If we all logged off; would that cool Dunfee off?

This is kind of what I was imagining, though. We could punch one hole through todd's office to the outside and get cold air, then punch another one in the floor and send the hot air downstairs. $600 + piping + installation costs seems more reasonable, but apparently not a total solution compared to self-contained units?

And these are the servers hosting the data from the shoots. Not forum stuff or love solutions.

    http://www.tjernlund.com/airshare_ventilation.htm

AireShare™ AS1, AS1P & AS2 Room-to-Room transfer fans pull cool air from floor level or warm air from ceiling level and distribute high or low.
The simple answer to this is to contact your local HVAC professional.

    - I see someone posted that already. Something to think about, and I'm sure your local fire code will dictate, is what happens in the event of a fire? If the server catches on fire, potentially you can be dumping toxic smoke downstairs.

I ran into this issue with a residential application.

Also, your server room (that presumably holds lots of important data) is potentially overheating and spending a couple of thousand on a solution is blowing the budget? Penny wise, pound foolish?

What do you do in the summer? I know it's not that hot there but a vent to the outside will not help when air temps are warm.

i love this thread. server room in a closet

delete all threads older than six months

    backups? who needs them

do you have any type of server mirroring - stop - take that disk off line too

video takes up a lot of space - reduce by 75%

next, sell the servers you no longer need

    hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

    wait - even better

lots of fans in the server closet and close the door - I have actually seen this - no joke

how about this? rent the space out for bikram yoga
