Where to skin around NYC?
Any good spots for skinning not too far outside of NYC? Resorts that allow it or, better yet, abandoned resorts?

I've skinned at Mohawk and Plattekill. Nice people at both places.

Just called around based on some of the suggestions and a little research, and here's what I found:
Plattekill - Yes w purchase of a full price lift ticket
Windham - Yes, $10 pass
Mohawk - Free. Uphill policy posted on website
Hunter - No
Mountain Creek - No
Highmount (same as Belleayre?) - Spoke w Belleayre and they do not
Anyone know any areas that are good and free?

Mohawk is my local hill and they are totally cool with skinning, even when the lifts are spinning. It's a little far from NYC, probably about 2.5 hrs, and there's no challenging terrain, but it's a nice little hill with good people and zero attitude.

You definitely don't need a ticket to skin at Plattekill. Maybe that is the policy. But the chance of someone stopping you is similar to the chance that an under-inflated football changed the outcome of the Pats-Colts game.

How close do you want to stay to the city? There are some old ski areas that are worth a shot. Try the old Silvermine in Bear Mt St Park, the lot is usually plowed because people use the main slope for sledding. Even closer are some of the hills in Van Cortland Park in the Bronx. If you get lucky you'll find the old rope tow area that used to be there and there are a few sorta long shots around the park as well.
