TR: The Darkest Days
The darkest days of the year are the days surrounding the winter solstice, December 21. Call it plus or minus a month. For most people, these are the times when you arrive at work in the dark, then leave work in the dark. They are depressing days, devoid of light, exacerbated by stress and dread of the upcoming holidays, of in-laws and boring "family time." But if we are lucky, we might get to witness nature's light show.
But for us skiers, we see things differently. For us, the darkest days are the days when the sun angle is low, and the snow stays soft no matter the weather conditions.
Sure, lines haven't necessarily filled in completely yet, but by the time the darkest days arrive, they are usually do-able.
There's enough snow to try stupid things.
Sometimes it's deep.
Other times, bluebird.
But when it's not, the trees provide contrast.
Of course, some people just want to show off.
Despite the short days, the sun angle is favorable.
And when it comes in right...
There is nothing better.

Nice work.

Bump for darkness, great job!

Old school TR!!! Love it buddy, well done.
I totally agree, the darkest days are my favorite days of winter if only for the killer light we get.

Great pics! I lot of pow was skied during that cycle. Living in the icebox, I'm usually pretty glad when 2/1 rolls around. I feel ski season is usually a gets better as is goes type deal until I get the kayak out then it's over. I always talk a big game about big spring tours that rarely ever happen.
