I think that you have it right, but you may want to just add Death Valley

Day one, alpine start on some logging road in Oregon. Drove all day to Logan, Ut. Chilling round here tomorrow and preparing the bear 100 ultra on Friday/sat. I'm not running, supporting a friend-I'll post a picture of him in the pain cave at mile 80 or something.
Cheers for the recommendations fellas

Wind Rivers. Cirque of the Towers for long alpine granite rock routes and reasonable hike in--9 miles--from the west. I haven't been there in years so I don't know what the roads are like now in that sector but probably still not a place you'd want to drive out of in or after a snow storm. Other approaches to the range tend to be in the 20 mile range. More alpine terrain in the north with small glaciers and at least one ice route --on Mt Helen -- in the Titcomb basin area. As best as I can tell there's still no quotas or advance permits needed from either east or west. Can anyone update. A lot more solitude than the Tetons, if that matters to you.
Permits will be required for overnight trips to most climbing in the High Sierra; quotas apply through november. Tetons and yellowstone will also have permit and reservation issues. I've never been to either in october so not sure how much of an issue.
As far as october weather Sierra certainly a better bet than the rockies.
Oops--looks like I'm too late.

Via Ferrata? Or Canyoneering while in Telluride?

Yeah man just did the via Ferratta with the gf while the others climb over Ophir. Was pretty fun, I have done lots of ferrata's in the Dolomites and this isn't obviously like those big ones, but a good thing to do on a mixed weather day. Think we are heading round to silverton tonight, then bailing to the desert as it's pretty snowy up high.
Dirt bag for life
I'm finding the mining history interesting, strange booming sounds coming from this tunnel, guessing it's somehow connected to mines that are still being used?

In the future, check out Roadtripper as an app and site to help organize road trip destinations. I use it on most of my cross country trips.
