I'll vouch for that... was great coffee. Sage even said something about relocating to the east coast to ski just for the coffee...

J, can you post the link to the coffee maker you got on Amazon? I think it was a Cuisinart?

For coffee, we buy Starbucks French Roast from Costco, but will try the EP.

Moka pot with any one of the vacuum packed pre-ground Italian blends. A minimum of fucking around, intense flavour, cheap and satisfying. I can live without crema. Enjoying a mug right now.

This, and for the price, the Kirkland pre-ground stuff ain't terrible. The one that comes in the big brown and black can. Not the best in the world but it's cheap.

That's what I get. It doesn't taste as fresh after a few days, but it still makes a good press. Also, I don't have a grinder and I'm lazy.

I have dun the roast your own green beans for years and luv it. Usually works out to 40-50% less moneys although there is a one time expense of a roaster. Also have a Cussinart grind and brew but if I dood it again I wud just have a separate burr grindr and coffee maker.

If I buy a huge bag of beans at Costco and brew two cups a day, those beans are lasting me a long time. Should I worry they will go stale before I'm finished, or do beans keep good for a long time?

Once the beans have been roasted they have a definite shelf life which largely depends on how they are stored.

Green beans will keep indefinitely given correct storage.

I get the big yellow bag of whole beans at Costco - not sure the brand, but it's very tasty (Rainforest Blend or something like that, maybe?). If you find yourself at Whole Foods for some reason, their Pleasant Morning Buzz whole-bean coffee is one of the few truly good deals in the store. If you keep it in a sealed container in a dark cabinet and grind just enough beans for your FP each day, it'll keep fine. Don't keep coffee in the freezer, FYI - the constant defrosting/refreezing each time you take it out and put it back makes the beans go stale faster than just not freezing it to begin with.

Depends on how much of a hipster you are. I buy one of those bags and only make a pot of coffee on the weekends (and sometimes not even then), so a bag lasts me a long time. I don't notice a taste difference, it still tastes like good coffee, but I'm no connoisseur.

I was a espresso geek for a bit with the expensive stove top and conical burr grinder. Beautiful freshly roasted beans. Always worrying about the perfect grind.

Then I became a fan of black coffee and went with a syphon or hot press using the same beans and grinding.

Then my coffee hookup and his roasting co moved up to PDX = no more trading eggs and meat for coffee.

Now I have a $15 mr. coffee from target and I get 2.75 lbs of vacuum sealed Yuban for $10.50 at Costco. Wake up throw in water, coffee (I make it real strong) hit the button. Hardly any mess or time. Its glorious. One can lasts us (average 10 cups a day) around 3-4 weeks.

I've been toying with the idea of getting a roaster. Any pointers?

Well, the way I duz it is to buy my beans in bulk, in the past its been 33lbs of Bolivian AAA at a time. Usually get free shipping on that much. Look for an importer to buy from, many to choose from but I have had great luck with these guys http://invalsacoffee.com/.

My roaster is the NESCO,same as pictured belows, very good unit but be careful with the glass roasting chamber. I clean it every other use including the chaff screen and catalytic lid that helps to trap a lot of the roasting smoke.

Unground beans, in the freezer, lasts a long time. I usually grind in small batches, enough for a week, then keep the grind also in the freezer.

Costco has lots of good selections. My fave is their Starbucks super dark roast. Has less caffeine too with the dark roast.

Try the Allegro brand if available next time at whole foods, one of my favorite beans. In Colorado they have allegro in the bulk coffee bins at a great price, if you have to buy pre packed might not be as affordable. Allegro was a local Colorado roaster which was purchased by whole foods corp... They've had some flavors for $9.99 to 11.99 a pound which would be close to or cheaper than $26 for 2.2 lbs...
