San Diego help....
Mitch’s is a bit of a hike. Reading through the thread while sitting poolside at 5th and J. Seafood, nachos, oysters, fish tacos, happy hour...what is the play? Best coffee?
Will head north to Carlsbad in a few days for a Legoland excursion so let’s hear your N county recs too.

I always enjoy pokez. At 10th and E. I mention because you can walk to it from where you’re at.
When I went to legoland, we had dinner at the pizza port in Carlsbad. Plenty of other breweries, but pizza port has a special place in my heart.
Maybe not into late night cuz with family(?), but cafe Sevilla is super fun on 5th in the gas lamp area.
Jimmy Carter’s on 5th near balboa park is yummy.

If you are wanting other waterfront activities, the Maritime museum is cool and sometimes they take out the sailboats for a bay tour.

Going to SD in July for a conference with the family. We're staying in Gaslamp while I attend. Wife and kids will spend the week exploring, so she wants to relax on the beach for the last couple of days after the conference. Been looking at the Hotel Del Coronado cause we won't have a rental car, so can get there pretty easily from downtown via ferry and bus, and I saw it last year and thought it would be a sweet place to stay. It's pricey AF, and too froof for us, but we really want beach front. Should we be looking elsewhere? Found some nice places in La Jolla, but after Uber fees or rental car, they basically end up being a wash.
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.

Second hotel coranado. Walk across the street and rent a speed boat. Cruising around glorietta bay is fun. A lot to see and you and kids will enjoy it. You can cover a lot of water in an hour or two so price is no big deal, well worth it.

Keep in mind the motel 6 is around $100 a night in San Diego, hotels are very expensive.
I'm not sure why anyone would want to stay in the gas lamp unless they are wanting to party?
Check out Oceanside for cheapest near beach lodging. You can take the Coaster or Amtrak from downtown. Or any of the other stops.
If it was me, I would put wife and kids up in Solana Beach for the week, take train down to conference each day (assuming schedule works.) Or some other beach town along the train route.
Rental cars are dirt cheep, but you will get hit for parking at most places downtown.

Many years ago we stayed at the Hotel Del for a couple days while my wife was on a business trip. She had a meeting and I walked around checking shit out. I was hungry and found this little place not far away so I went in and ordered and I had one of the best things I had ever eaten up to that point, man was it good...this magical delicious food was called a "burrito", I heard they've since become quite popular.
