Confirmed that there is a ton of ice in Dana Couloir, but still ridable, but maybe not by next weekend. If the lower ice patch spreads wall-to-wall it will be scary movies.
West chutes of Ellery still cold and soft.
Coke chute looks good from far.
    Saddlebag gate still closed.
And...another refresher coming over these next two weeks. 2' or so, perhaps?

Don't despair, Jim, Plateau season's just starting!

I'm stoked the snow levels are higher with this incoming system. The last thing we need is cold, low density snow. Spring refreshes are way better with warmer systems.

Sonora Pass has been sweet. Clouds rolled in earlier today. Fine with me. Rather see the snowpack bake slowly than get broiled off quick.

A lot of haze in the air looking east.

The haze is from wildfires in Siberia

The folks at Save Mono Lake in Lee Vining told us 120 is planned to open all the way through on May 1. With some storm action up ahead, I suppose that's tentative.

From the looks of things up on Sonora a couple of days ago (a foot or two by the road for all of a mile or so), there can't be much to clear between TM and Tioga (and it's bone dry from west to and past TM), but supposedly they're taking advantage of the closure to do some road work.

Here's a few pics from Dana Couloir and Poop Chute @ Ellery on Sunday.

    Jordan exiting Poop Chute.

A man proud of his ice slalom skillz.
I'd go next weekend too if I could, it's good to go. Dana Couloir was turnable and actually kinda fun, despite all the ice, and Ellery chutes were fluffy goodness.
    Get after it fellas.

Check out the blog for more details.

    Nice!
Did you happen to look into solstice? How did it look, and how was the entrance?

I could see Tioga closing for a day or two after this new, colder system coming in Friday night. Might be wise to have contingency plans that don't rely on passes/gates being open. Jesus I need to ride something. It's been over a month since I made a turn. My new $7k mountain bike is helping my angst though

From NOAA forecast discussion for eastside region this morning:
    ".UPDATE...
MODELS CONTINUE TO TREND WETTER WITH TROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT INTO
SATURDAY AND WE WILL BE MAKING SOME RATHER SIGNIFICANT CHANGES TO
THE FORECAST THIS AFTERNOON. STORM IS DROPPING SOUTHWARD WITH
DECENT MOISTURE TAP OFF THE PACIFIC AND PLENTY OF COLD AND
UNSTABLE AIR ALOFT. SNOW IS LOOKING MORE LIKELY LATE FRIDAY NIGHT
INTO SATURDAY WHICH WILL IMPACT TRAVEL AND OUTDOOR INTERESTS IN
THE SIERRA AND NORTHEAST CALIFORNIA ABOVE 5000-5500 FEET WITH UP
TO A FOOT OR MORE OF SNOW ALONG THE CREST"

^^^ Wow, checked the forecast earlier and NWS was showing a couple inches at most. Better not pack up my split just yet.

Hey Rod, Solstice's entrance was way mellow. Could scoot in right off the top for a bonus steep turn or two, or the skiers left "sneak" was a gentle roll.

The folks at Saddlebag Lake Resort told me they do not have an opening day scheduled so they are unsure when the gate will open.

Im doing the annual Sbag trip next week so I'll let everyone know how it is. I'm thinking I should bring my fly rod and the bug spray...

Telemike: I'm probably going to take my 8-year old daughter skiing on False White on Sunday. She'll snowshoe up while I carry her skis. (False White seems like a good intro to bc skiing.) If you and your son were interested in joining us . . . .

I'll also be at either Tioga or Sonora tomorrow.

False White sounds good too. Our plan is Sonora Pass with Owen. Welcome to join us there. Easy climb and ski.

Good idea, but I'd suggest Gaylor - right above the road, and good open terrain. False White can be a bit of a slog for a newbie to get out of there. Don't ask me how I know.

Also, for taking your youngin out. Well done.

    Eastern Sierra BC 2014-15

This is the kid zone on Sonora Pass. Can see the whole route from the road. Can see the car the whole way. Good place to start.
