Police need to be pulled out of the drug war ASAP. Giving police the authority to deal with drugs is like handing a child one of those animal balloons at a party to play with. All they do is squeeze on one end and the other end of the epidemic bulges out (see crackdown on oxycontin results in uptick in heroin use). They are ill-equipped to understand the nuances of society that results in drug use, and throwing people in jail and shooting them for drug use sure as shit won't fix it.

I was watching Newshour last night, and Judy Woodroff had a white dude that ran some sort of policing think tank in DC, and a black woman who was with the NAACP in some capacity, and it was cordial throughout, except the point when the white guy brought up this nobody will want to be a cop thing, and the black woman just politely slightly contorted her face in response. She couldn't help it.
