Rail... Hahaha. Yeah it would be nice but it can't happen in enough places to be a valid option.

We're paying more attention to supermarket points programs and have only paid over $4/gal for 93 a few times the last 2 weeks. I paid 3.74 in CT yesterday with $.95/gal off. It maxes at 20 gallons so I thought I pretty well nailed it at 19.87

What's the over/under on cutting back? Maybe $7? (Until it's....$9?)

Was on the road yesterday- 3 states as part of the drive- over 330 miles and 5 hrs probably round trip. Cheapest was at $3.59 a gallon regular (where I filled up as I was about an 1/8th of a tank at that point and close to heading into the higher priced states. Many spots with gallon of regular showing $4.19 and a few spots higher like $4.29 a gallon... Signs for the Indian Reservation Stations with no federal gas tax were around $3.85 or so with other stations in the same state over $4.15 a gallon and up and the Thruway station was $4.45 or something like that. Started with a 1/4 or so in the tank in the morning. Sitting back home with a 1/2 of tank again now last night.

Japan's another place I've enjoyed using their awesome rail system. Skinny little country with high population too.

I WISH we could do better, I do. But after witnessing California bungle their latest efforts SO badly despite tremendous investment, I just have very little faith we can ever have rail as good as we see in many other countries. CA was supposed to build the great proof of concept and model for the nation to follow. Certainly wasn't for lack of money. Doh!

Our system is shit tho, I will wholeheartedly agree on. It's embarrassing. I would LOVE to travel across the US like I have overseas. I just don't know a REALISTIC solution we could actually make happen. Esp with all the usual assholes getting in the way.

CA is currently building the HSR. Last I read they plan on opening the first segment in 2029…. But that first segment is Fresno to Bakersfield……….

theres big CHF in euro freight rail - like the gotthard basis tunnel
Man would I love a ski train to Sugarbowl. It has a railroad that still goes right by it too.

    Ski trains.

We’re such a car culture however.
Plus skiing has so much baggage. Literally

Don’t they have two rail systems, one for freight and one for passengers?

Sort of- they have Amtrak which is for people and passenger rail and there is CSX and a number of other railroads doing freight on the rails. They may in some parts of the country use the same rail lines, others they have some dedicated rail lines just for the Amtrak. Some areas also have state or local lines - run by Transit Authorities or supplemental to bus transit.

I can't believe there is a 38 page thread about the cost of gas. Seriously, what share of your income goes to gas? I thought you were all dentists? Now food on the other hand...

So now refineries all over the world are flipping to produce diesel, partly because it's actually profitable but more importantly so Europe can keep producing and moving food and important stuff. Apparently they've lost their entire supply and are about to run out and it's better that people don't starve than we whine about higher gas prices.

If American Ethanol shoves E15 down our throats, say goodbye to every carbureted engine you own. Shit gonna fuck up even the EFI engines, absolutely horrible shit

Ethanol is a solvent, is corrosive and it's hygroscopic

^ or any vehicle you don't burn a tank off pretty quickly. That shit eats through all sorts of things you don't want it to.

Gasoline is a solvent too. Best degreaser around.

Not defending ethanol, I hate it, but that's a silly point to make.

Ethanol will dissolve the varnish left behind from old gas, which gas doesn't dissolve

I used old stale gas to wash greasy parts with myself

Right wing propaganda has fucked up this country in all kinds of ways but Ken seems like a solid mag in all kinds of ways so can we just move on?
