Take I70 and it's 3 days plus 2 hours.

Two ignorant questions re Jay Peak:

1. Cheap lodging recs for a single night along the way off of I-91?
(This place looks like it could be perfect: http://www.lyndonmotorlodge.com i.e., drive up 2.5 hrs Fri night, sleep 8 hrs, then another hour of driving Sat morning.)

2. Current backcountry ski conditions?
(I recall that the wx fx was for mixing even at Jay, and with cold temps since then -- including -19F tonight! -- I would think that everything would be unskiably locked up ... although the resort is reporting everything open, but then again maybe that's possible only with continued skier traffic to break up everything?)

Jay skied really well yesterday. Creamy snow that filled in the troughs. Crust was light. I stayed at the Lyndon Motor Lodge years ago and it was ok from what I remember. Heard that further south got no crust.

ok, I had no clue what 'hermitage' was until seeing all the comments so I had to google it. All I can say is wow. Only if it was around yrs ago I would have brought my kids there, so they were always "safe", as opposed to all those other threatening ski areas they grew up on.

yowza, several weeks of taking care of injured and/or sick kids finally took its toll on the Ripper and I've got some grungy strep throat keepin me down now; looks like I'm armchair observing the transition of this great winter into a grand spring pow season... hope to get back out there soon; in the meanwhile, the stoke keeps my brain alive.
