Pico is fun. Killington-y terrain without the FLIDs. Great with kids as everything from the top ends up back at the lodge. Make sure to hit up the bar on the top floor- great lineup of ski club shields from Conn. and NJ. Usually some ribald old timers telling tales of the ludes/coke/freelove 60s and 70s in the greater Kton/Pico valley... maybe keep the kids away from the bar.

Thanks bud, I dig your face shot cameo and yeah at that point ^^^ walking wasn't in the cards. Glad the tides shifted a bit.
Pow sliding has been great the last 2 days and its been deep for the hikers:

I know it's a long shot and not really EC, but I'm in Keystone for a conference and am looking to ski A Basin on Friday... If any EC mags happen to be in the area, shoot me a PM.

Thanks for the beta on Pico, I'm in. That and MSB are the two I have left in VT that I have yet to ski, and I'll save MSB for a pow day.

11.8` bob with a tiny flurry of snow [I can count the flakes going by the window] just starting.
My initial disappointment yesterday with only a scrap of snow at the base was banished after hitting the nearly empty hill. The 3/32" crust held the snow against the light breeze blowing and couldn't be felt at all while skiing.
A little sun lit up the few trees left in "the glade"
Lots of good options just off the beaten path, this
Led to this
Skied all the way to the door through some fun trees.
An inch of sun/heat crust formed overnight down low, should separate the wheat from the chaff. Get after it!www.apriliaforum.com

Sweet shots guys looks like you had a good time, not a problem VTCS, looking forward to some turns on Saturday! Smuggs was pretty sweet yesterday, until cruising back to the car to switch out boards I caught a buried rope about 50' from the parking lot that tripped me up and flung me face first into the snow, them nose things bleed a lot when you smash them. Still a sick day and thanks to whoever it was that showed me their little stash by the pond, that was a sick line and I owe you a beer for that one.

Two Ignorant Q's re Jay
Two ignorant questions re Jay Peak:
1. Cheap lodging recs for a single night along the way off of I-91?
(This place looks like it could be perfect: http://www.lyndonmotorlodge.com i.e., drive up 2.5 hrs Fri night, sleep 8 hrs, then another hour of driving Sat morning.)
2. Current backcountry ski conditions?
(I recall that the wx fx was for mixing even at Jay, and with cold temps since then -- including -19F tonight! -- I would think that everything would be unskiably locked up ... although the resort is reporting everything open, but then again maybe that's possible only with continued skier traffic to break up everything?)

Thanks from the lycra crowd!
And here's the link for their rando race info in case anyone is interested, lycra-clad or otherwise:

Long drive just for the race, but tempted about the possibility of mixing it up with a horde of fast Quebecois, especially after this past Saturday's TGR skiercross rando race:

crust was not an issue on Mansfield yesterday, didn't really find any, anywhere
my buddy told me there was a little crust at Sutton, but didn't affect skiing
and based on what I saw near Jay earlier in the week, i'm guessing it's all still very good

Jonathan, years ago my wife and son billeted there, worked for them.
Food:
The Miss Lyndonville diner is worth a look for any meal. Nice vibe, interesting menu and I never miss the chance when going to Burke and sometimes even going to Jay.The sad truth is that whine does not age well

Wow, great photo series! After maintaining a modest lead during the first lap on the skin track, Jonathan proceeded to blow past me on the down. This captures when I slipped from third to fourth, never to recover, in spite of a neck and neck race on lap 2.
Let it be known that Jonathan can ski like a madman on Rando gear!Last edited by dark_star; 03-05-2015 at 10:50 AM.

Can't answer your questions because I haven't been there for a while and have no idea about the lodging. I will be skiing Jay from Saturday till Tuesday, so will cheer you on from the lift. If some random greybeard in a bright red jacket says "Hello Jonathan," that will be me. On the other hand, if it be mayhem on the slopes, I'll be heading for the quiet woods. Good luck in the race."... I promise you this: you will outlive the bastards." – Edward Abbey

I'm going to guess that Jay area is in prime bc shape. I was there less than a week ago, so things change, but I don't think it warmed up that much and if so only south facing. Neufox?

How long a drive to Jay from W. Dover, VT? Is there a better way to go than 91?

Jonathan,
There was a light zipper crust that coated everything out of the trees, it was highly skiable but you could feel it cat claw the skis a bit, shouldn't be an issue. The wind honked hard tues night and as typical, scoured open areas, all BC and tree skiing was/is beyond prime. Snowed most of the morning yesterday. It snowed again this morning as the front came through, more snow in coming for the weekend. Conditions are excellent, never went above freezing on the hill. Some sun crust showing up now on the south facing terrain, but with all the pow it is just something to notice, doesn't effect the ski feel. Enjoy.
